We are very excited to announce we are now accepting applications for Cook 1, On-Call positions here at the historic Washington Soldiers Home in beautiful Orting, Washington!

*This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.
*Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for 24/7 facilities. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. The 5% Premium Pay is in effect until June 29th, 2025

In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to honorably discharged veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.
In this culinary role, you'll be responsible for assisting with the preparation of meals served to residents. This includes preparing all of the modified textured foods for the meals prepared when on shift and distributing food in a safe and sanitary manner.

  • Assures that all special items required by residents are weighed and prepared.
  • Uses batch cooking techniques to assure maximum freshness and quality of product.
  • Reports the need for modification to recipes or production method as necessary.
  • Prepares box lunches for the resident appointments as required.
  • Assisting with the preparation of breakfast, lunch and dinner meals.
  • Preparing food for approximately 20 residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Assisting with preparation activities to ensure the preparation of sufficient quantities of regular and modified diet food.
  • Ensuring all special items required by residents are prepared.
Required Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of experience in a large-scale food establishment.
  • Must be able to lift 60 lbs. and capable of reaching a minimum of 36" using proper technique to stock shelves and have access to supplies.
  • Must be capable of pushing and pulling with sufficient strength. Employee must be able to walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in the English language for dietary tray cards, food preferences, recipes, and ongoing training.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate Degree in food service management, nutritional care, or related field.
  • One (1) year of food service supervisory experience.
  • Valid State Driver License.

  • Must comply with health screening requirements by undergoing a tuberculosis skin test and remain current in CPR after hire.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety & Act Standards.
  • Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.
  • This position is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees.
