JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Penn State Facilities Engineering Institute (PSFEI) is seeking a Water Systems Engineer to join our team and assist with our mission to guide facility managers across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with research and knowledge-driven advisory services. The successful candidate will have experience in water and wastewater permitting, design, construction observation, and operation and maintenance guidance.
Who We Are
PSFEI is a front-facing, non-academic unit with a rich tradition of providing facility engineering services since our founding in 1947-we recently celebrated 75 years of service to our Commonwealth clients! PSFEI is part of the College of Engineering at Penn State; however, we touch the lives of thousands of people in all 67 counties of Pennsylvania and across our nation through the facility engineering, education program, facility condition assessment, and energy management advisory services that we provide. Through our success, we have grown to a workforce of over 40 engineers, specialists, programmers, and administrative staff that are located throughout the Commonwealth. We are committed to helping our clients optimize the operation of their facilities and supporting our staff in achieving a high level of satisfaction in carrying forth this mission.
Your Role at PSFEI
As a Water Systems Engineer, you will join a team of other specialists and engineers that use their engineering design and problem-solving skills to provide clients with technical insight on the condition of the water and wastewater components that are critical to the operation of their facility. The recommendations and counsel you provide are essential to the public health of the facility occupants, the financial success of the facility, and the environmental impact on the waterways of the Commonwealth.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing on-site evaluations and troubleshooting of water, wastewater, and stormWater Systems, culminating in written reports with recommendations for improving systems.
  • Completing design and document reviews and assisting clients with regulatory compliance.
  • Assisting clients with water management and safety plans relating to waterborne pathogens, water conservation, and water reuse.
  • Investigating probable causes of piping and system corrosion related to water chemistry, including those associated with industrial boiler and chilled Water Systems.
  • Providing educational and training opportunities to client facility personnel.

This position is a blend of office and fieldwork that primarily requires day travel, but may include an occasional overnight stay.
Who Should Apply
This position is specifically tailored to candidates who have the ability to identify water system deficiencies, and then apply practical solutions using their education, experience, and research. This position is well suited to mid-level design engineers looking to shift from hard-core design and project management positions to applied, research-oriented engineering advisory positions, while enjoying the benefits of being employed by Penn State.
Education and Experience Requirements
This position requires a bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science discipline and at least two years of related experience. Degrees in Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering, a professional engineering license, and additional years of related experience are strongly preferred.
Successful candidates in this position often have work experience with professional design firms, municipal water and sewer authorities, and state and federal agencies. The successful candidate will be expected to interact with a variety of audiences and exhibit excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
Other Requirements Worth Noting
This position is based at our State College, PA office, which is adjacent to the Penn State University Park campus. However, we are supportive of flexible work arrangements, including hybrid and remote, when aligned with the ability to meet the needs of our unit and the essential duties of the position.
