Job Description
Water Resources Engineer II, III, or IV
Job Description
In this position you will assist in planning for Utah's future water needs in the Hydrology and Modeling section. You will develop and maintain surface water models, assist with Great Salt Lake modeling, the state water budget effort, develop water use projections for municipal and industrial water use, complete hydrology and flood inundation studies as well as create programs to interact with databases. The division uses a variety of modeling platforms and programming languages including RiverWare, GoldSim, ArcGIS, FORTRAN, Visual Basic, Python, and R.
The incumbent will:
  • Guide the decisions made about Utah waters by developing and maintaining surface water models.
  • Use and receive training in engineering software such as RiverWare, GoldSim, ArcGIS Pro, HEC-RAS HEC-HMS, VIC, and RAPIDS.
  • Document hydrologic studies, models, and their results.
  • Use databases to read data, store results and manipulate data.
  • Use GIS to analyze engineering problems.
  • Ensure accurate information is being presented to the public and decision makers by timely analysis and collecting the most up to date data .
  • Develop scripts and programs to solve or analyze problems
  • Coordinate and consult with Division staff and the public.
  • Help achieve Division goals by assisting other sections as needed.
The Ideal Candidate
The best-qualified candidates will possess:
  • An ability to solve problems using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, and make recommendations and propose quality solutions; analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions.
  • Knowledge of principles, theories, and practices of civil engineering.
  • Surface water modeling experience (RiverWare, GoldSim, HEC-RAS, etc.).
  • General GIS knowledge.
  • Some programming experience using Visual Basic, Visual C#, Python, R, GoldSim, FORTRAN, or VBA.
  • Knowledge of data base management methodologies, database maintenance, design, queries (SQL Server, Access, SQlite).
  • An ability to use State or agency-specific software application program(s) and provide technical assistance to users.
  • Communicate information and ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, and/or procedures.
  • Patience and willingness to work cooperatively towards common objectives; work. with people in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact and professionalism.
  • An ability to schedule and organize project tasks in a logical sequence.

Typical Qualifications
Typical Qualifications:
  • Either holds a license as a Professional Engineer in Utah or have satisfactory completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam
  • Working knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of civil engineering
  • Knowledge of general principles of Water Resources Engineering, water use, supply and hydrology
  • Proficiency with office software programs: MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Publisher)
  • We value programming skills, Visual Basic, Python, R, GoldSim, RiverWare, and VBA
