Water Protection Specialist Ii

Under general supervision performs and leads others in work in implementation, operation and maintenance of a backflow prevention program as required by City ordinances and State and Federal regulations; establishes and carries out a Well Head Protection Plan and other water and wastewater duties; leads other workers in their duties and acts as a relief in their absence.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

• Tests and repairs cross connection control devices, performs premise surveys of customer buildings and grounds, identifies problems with backflow preventers, determines flow of structures with multiple water use process, repairs and replaces essential parts of backflow preventers.
• Performs, or causes to be performed, cross-connection surveys to determine where and what type of backflow prevention device is required by City Ordinances and State and EPA regulations; advises property owners of requirements necessary to control cross-connections.
• Keeps accurate written records on all devices including operational, maintenance and repairs; arranges scheduling of annual testing of backflow prevention devices with property owners.
• Checks mud and grease traps for proper design and maintenance; surveys areas around wells and devises plan of action to protect wells from contamination; checks for leaks in water lines and plugs in sewer lines; responds to after-hour and emergency calls.
• Supervise and record all related backflow related plumbing inspections on all new residential and commercial facilities apply for water service.
• Supervise the Water Departments construction water program, which includes 40 residential and 6 fire hydrant devices.
• Assist plumbers and testers in the repair maintenance and testing of all types of backflow prevention devices.
• Performs other work which is consistent with the essential elements of the job.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

• Knowledge of federal, state and local water and wastewater standards.
• Knowledge of water and wastewater department operations and measures to maintain sanitary potable water supply.
• Knowledge of mud and grease trap operation and maintenance.
• Knowledge of general plumbing.
• Ability to test and repair all types of backflow prevention devices.
• Ability to keep accurate written records on all testing, maintenance and repairs of all backflow prevention devices and of cross-connection survey in commercial, industrial and residential establishment.
• Ability to communicate in person, by telephone and two-way radio; ability to read and understand instructions, manuals, testing dials and data on a computer monitor.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with property owners, water users and representatives of State and Federal agencies.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Any combination of experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school and three years of experience with a water and sanitary sewer department or related work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license as required by the State
• Possession of a Grade 6 Water operator license.
• May require Grade 4 Wastewater Certificate and Grade 1 Water operator license is preferred.

Pay: $24.26 - $34.96 per hour
