The Town of Erie is seeking a motivated individual who is ready to make a positive impact on our community's infrastructure. As a Water Meter Maintenance Technician for Erie, you'll support the operation and maintenance of Town commercial, irrigation, and residential meters, along with other essential infrastructure. This position will work under established guidelines to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to independently perform tasks.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Essential

  • Assists, performs and/or directs a variety of routine to complex maintenance and construction activities to include meter sets, and meter vaults.

  • Inspects new construction concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk, and meter pit/curb stops.

  • Operates heavy and light duty equipment to perform related maintenance and construction assignments such as front-end loader, dump truck, skid steer, backhoe, and snow plow.

  • Performs a variety of meter reading tasks to include reading residential, raw water and commercial meters, changing out meters and maintaining detailed records of all activities, performing rereads, performing service orders from Finance including checking for leaks, turn off/on, move in/out, rereads after billing.

  • Performs a variety of heavy laboring activities including the use of hand tools, light power equipment and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.

  • Fabricates, installs, maintains and uses a variety of specialized and complex programming and meter reading equipment and performs light mechanical repair and maintenance.

  • Performs snow removal activities either by hand, small equipment or heavy equipment as assigned.

  • Employee will be on a work on-call schedule as assigned.

 

Administrative and Customer Service

  • Performs data entry of information, maintenance logs and other data.

  • Responds to and coordinates with customers and contractors for work orders, inquiries and complaints.

  • Prepares necessary records and reports.

 

Safety

  • Performs a variety of duties that requires considerable knowledge of the use and wear of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Performs routine safety checks of equipment and minor maintenance activities on vehicles and equipment and maintains records of activities.

  • Maintains a safe working environment to include working in traffic and congested areas, working in ditches and confined spaces and all work environments.

  • Assists in the cleaning and organization of shop area.

 

Operations & Maintenance Support

  • Assisting Streets in maintenance of roadways and signage.

  • Assisting Distribution, Collections, Storm Operations tasks to include maintenance and inspection of sanitary sewer, manhole, lift stations, CCTV, water, sewer and storm lines, hydrants, valve, and PRVs.

  • Assisting Locates with utility locates.

  • Assisting in Town events preparation, operation and break down.

 

Qualifications are Dependent on the Level:

 

 

Water Meter Maintenance Technician I

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One (1) year of laboring, heavy maintenance, equipment operations or other experience

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

 

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

  • Required to obtain a Colorado Commercial Driver's License Class B within one year.
  • Flagger Certification within one year.

  • Permit Required Confined Space Certification within one year.

  • Distribution 1 Certificate within one year.

 

Water Meter Maintenance Technician II

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Two (2) years of related work experience in the utility field

 A combination of education and experience may be considered.  

 

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

  • Valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tanker endorsement and satisfactory driving record.  
  • Flagger Certification. 

  • Permit Required Confined Space Certification. 

  • Level I Distribution certification from the Colorado Operator Certification Program Office. 

  • Stormwater (PACE) Certificate or equivalent. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

 

Knowledge of: use or learn to use hand tools and heavy equipment such as front-end loader, sweeper, backhoe, dump truck, skid steer, and other mobile machinery. Knowledge of basic math skills including how to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Ability to read and comprehend simple instruction, short correspondence, and memos and carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with employees and the public. Ability to effectively present information in a one-on-one and/or small group situation, to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to supervise and direct subordinates in the absence of division supervisor.

 

Environmental Factors:

Work is frequently performed in an inside standard office environment as well as an outside setting. Frequent to constant use of a personal computer. Work may involve competing demands, performing multiple tasks, and working to deadlines. Tasks frequently require outside work with moderate to high noise levels and local travel (rarely requiring out of town travel). Tasks frequently include walking on uneven surfaces and exposure to chemicals, gases, fumes, dust, vibrations, use of light to heavy equipment operations and working in traffic; occasionally working with heights and extreme temperatures.

 

Physical Factors:                                                                                                                                         

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly grasping, fingering, and handling items as well as talking and hearing. Employee will frequently be sitting, standing, reaching, or walking for extended periods of time, use of near visual acuity and constantly moving objects weighing over 10 pounds, frequently over 50 pounds and occasionally over to 100 pounds. Occasionally tasks require stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, balancing, use of far visual acuity, color discrimination, and peripheral vision. Employee may rarely have tasks requiring running or use of depth perception.
