Job description

The Long Beach Utilities Department is a Commission-governed department of the City of Long Beach consisting of 500 employees and operating with an annual budget of $300 million. The Department is currently seeking candidates for the position of Water Conservation Intern. The selected candidate will be placed in the City's Administrative Intern - Non-Career classification.
Non-career employees are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions. Non-Career employees are limited to 1,600 work hours per service year and are not guaranteed a minimum number of work hours.
The Long Beach Water Conservation Internship Program brings real-world conservation policy experience to qualified students. Past accomplishments of interns include the design and implementation of a program reducing landscape irrigation, the development of WATER CONSERVATION programs for restaurants, and implementing the most successful turf-replacement program in California.
The Water Conservation Intern will assist in the implementation and management of WATER CONSERVATION programs. Such programs include the following:
  • replacing grass lawns with beautiful drought-friendly landscapes,
  • promoting the adoption of water-saving devices,
  • helping Long Beach residents adhere to water-use restrictions.
The Water Conservation Intern will have opportunities to attend local and regional meetings to better understand how public agencies interact to create and implement public policy.
Additional Details
Internship will begin March 2024 and last approximately one year.
Hours will average about 32 hours per week, although the Department tries to be flexible for major school-related events such as mid-terms and finals.

  • Assist in administering WATER CONSERVATION programs by scheduling residential and commercial surveys and other appointments, completing conservation program forms, and entering conservation program data into databases and spreadsheets.
  • Perform fieldwork such as site inspections at various residential and commercial facilities for WATER CONSERVATION opportunities and program compliance.
  • Assist in the development of conservation program content for social media and websites (advertising and outreach/communication), printed materials for door hangers, postcards, yard signs, and other customer correspondence.
  • Perform research, compile, and analyze information to develop, implement, and improve WATER CONSERVATION programs.
  • Attend community events representing the Department, possibly after hours or on weekends, to help educate customers and promote conservation programs.
  • Interact directly with customers via phone, email, mail, and in-person to provide education and outreach by answering questions about WATER CONSERVATION programs and their water use, such as high bills.
  • Analyze and provide customer water use data and make residential and commercial site visits to help customers determine the possible cause and solutions to reduce their water usage; coordinate with other Departments to make appropriate bill adjustments.
  • Assist with long range water resources planning duties.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • The internship is open to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree, or those who have recently graduated with a degree (within the past year) in civil engineering, environmental engineering, environmental science, hydrology, water resources, public policy, or a related field.*
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License. Please note a DMV printout and copy of current Drivers License will need to be submitted for review during the onboarding process if selected for the position.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL DEMONSTRATE:
  • Be customer and goal focused.
  • Have good written and oral communication skills.
  • Have strong attention to detail.
  • Understand basic software such as MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Be self-driven and able to work independently without supervision.
  • Have an interest in public policy, the environment, and WATER CONSERVATION.
