Job description

ABOUT THE POSITION

YOUR FUTURE BEGINS HERE!

As the Wastewater Systems Operator Apprentice, you will:
  • Assist and operate specialized equipment, machines, and vehicles to install, clean, maintain, and repair water lines, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Assist and install, adjust, and test flow, sampling, and metering equipment.
  • Assist in monitoring water wells, tests water chlorine, and collects/records daily meter readings.
  • Assist in maintenance and monitoring booster station, pumps, chlorinators, generators, pressure tanks, and related equipment.
  • Assist with collecting, labels, and documents water samples for laboratory testing and performs simple tests on water.
  • Assist with installing water meters and fire hydrants.
  • Assist with the operation, maintenance and control of wastewater treatment plant including the operation of valves, gates, pumps and machinery.
  • Assist with ensuring treatment plant operations are performed in accordance with quality standards, and safety regulations and procedures; and that they meet Local, State and Federal regulations pertaining to treatment of sanitary wastewater.
  • Assist with sampling (Jar test) the influent and effluent at various stages of processing and identify problems and ensuring proper and efficient operation of the treatment plant.
  • Assist with observing variations in operating conditions, interpreting meter and gauge readings, and reporting abnormalities to Supervisor/Chief Operator.
  • Assist senior level operators and mechanics to resolve operational problems.
  • Assist with conducting basic electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintaining plant work areas, tools and equipment and collect samples as instructed.

IDEAL CANDIDATE



Possess the knowledge of:


  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in installing and repairing water mains and related fittings.
  • Operation of water distribution systems.
  • Heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Water sampling techniques.
  • Occupational hazards and safety procedures.
  • Use and proper disposal of disinfectants, oxidizing agents, pesticides, and hazardous materials.

Has the ability to:
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Install and repair water lines and related fixtures and equipment.
  • Service, maintain, and adjust water equipment.
  • Use mechanical tools and heavy equipment.
  • Collect, label, and test water samples.
  • Perform operator-level service and maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED: all requirements must be maintained throughout employment


  • Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis;
  • A valid Arizona Driver’s License at the time of appointment

Education, Certifications, Training and Experience
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.

DESIRED/PREFERRED:
  • Commercial license (A or B).
  • Backhoe and/or electrical experience.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • San Luis residency.
