Back to all Jobs Wastewater Plant Operator (Open Positions: 4) Department: WWTP Job Status: Full-Time Status: Accepting Applications Apply Now Job Summary The City of Battle Creek is looking to fill a Plant Operator position for the City of Battle Creek's Wastewater Treatment Plant. This will include operating, monitoring, cleaning, adjusting, and maintaining plant equipment to facilitate flow and treatment of wastewater. The Wastewater Treatment Plant is a 24/7, 365 day operation.

Current openings are on second shift (3pm - 11pm) and/or third shift (11pm - 7am) depending on the coverage needed. This position is covered under the terms and conditions of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement (CBA), which can be found on the City of Battle Creek's website. Pay for this position will depend on whether or not you currently have a WW D Operators Certification form EGLE.

Individuals without a certification will start off at $20.41/hour. Individuals who have a current WW D Operators Certification will start off at $22.50.hour. This position includes a 3 Blue Cross Blue Shield medical plans to select from, 2 vision plans through VSP, free dental though Delta Dental and life insurance, all of which are available on day one.

Employees in this position are required to contribute a minimum of 1% into a 457 Retirement Plan though MissionSquare, which has a 1:1 match up to 5%. Employees in this position are also required to contribute 4% into a C-1 City's Municipal Employees' Retirement System (MERS) pension plan which has a 1.5% multiplier. Additional benefits for this role include but are not limited to: 56 Hours of Vacation at 6 Months; 96 hours of vacation at your year anniversary; max comp bank of 120hours.

Training and payment for testing fees to obtain any Wastewater Operators Certification Stipend pay for a WW D Operators Certification: $225 Annually WW C: $275 Annually WW B: $350 Annually WW A: $500 Annually Stipend pay for Storm Water Certificate: $250 Annually Stipend for Safety Equipment: $175 Annually Stipend for Clothing Allowance: $250 Annually Essential Functions Operates and maintains all plant processes, pumps, conveyors, blowers, chlorinators, thickening/de-watering equipment used to process wastewater and its side streams. Observes variations in operating conditions, interpret meter/gauge reading, and make appropriate settings and adjustments. Cleans, collects, and removes accumulated grit, sludge, trash, grease, or other process-related residual material from all areas of the facility.

Collects samples of sludge, and/or wastewater for testing. May conduct tests on wastewater samples. Takes readings, submit reports, maintain logs, and keep records on gauges, charts, flow meters and other plant processes/equipment.

Cleans, controls, inspects, adjusts, and maintains equipment, processes, vehicles, and buildings/grounds. Cleans walkways and facility walls and floors to ensure a safe and aesthetic environment. Maintains plant yard and landscaping.

Assists in snow removal activities as necessary. Prepares correspondence, reports, and documentation as necessary. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone.

Work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and will be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic). Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED equivalency.

Up to 1 year experience in operations and maintenance of wastewater related equipment. Special Requirements: Obtain State of Michigan Class D Wastewater Operators License. Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan.
