Job description

Waste, Logistics & Environ. Specialist:

  • Coordinates plant production waste disposal and recycling activities in accordance with BMW policies and legal requirements.
  • Collaborates with technology waste generators and external service provider(s) to develop and steer logistics, recycling and waste disposal strategies and processes for Plant Spartanburg, including the new Energy Module Production Facility.
  • Coordinates projects including strategy development for Lithium-Ion technology, specifically related to recycling and disposal.
  • Develops new waste logistics methods of storage, supply, and disposal, including emergency strategies, by using corporate standard concepts.
  • Performs quantitative and qualitative evaluations, considering impact to logistics costs and structure.
  • Investigates supply methods including transportation, packaging, source of supply, and material flow for new or existing supply streams.
  • Initiates, investigates, and develops medium to long term planning strategies supporting waste logistics process streams and implements process improvements through innovative and creative methods.
  • Leads cross-functional project teams and represents all Logistics departments / strategies in Plant core teams, breakout teams and other special tasks associated with projects.
  • Partners with other Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) functions (Construction Safety, Environmental, Ergonomics) to address needs unique to battery cell production.
  • Develops technical solutions to difficult problems.
  • Ensures planning for regulated materials management meets all applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Supports other EHS functions with reviews of equipment and space designs including process review.
  • Develops regular status reports and indicators to measure assigned work activity including service provider performance management.
  • Obtains required certifications for handling hazardous / non-hazardous production waste and chemicals.
  • Participates with Environmental activities including audits ensuring all issues are closed/addressed promptly.
  • Understands and models VPS (Value Added Production System) Principles and concepts of Standard Work and Problem Solving. 
  • Adheres to 5S and Safety Standards and Principles.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

  • BA/BS degree; OR AA/AS degree AND 2 years of related professional engineering or science experience; OR the equivalent of 4 years of related professional experience in Chemical, Mechanical, Safety or, Industrial Engineering, Physical Sciences, or related field.
  • 5 years of professional logistics, waste, chemical, or environmental experience.
  • 2 years of project management experience.
  • 2 years of ISO 14001 Management experience (preferred).
  • 5 years of professional MS Office skills (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, SharePoint).
  • 3 years of ability to work effectively in teams.
  • 3 years of logistics skills (i.e., develops mid to long term strategies for the entire supply chain; supply method evaluation and analysis;
    develops emergency concepts; develops methods and standards).
  • 2 years of project leadership skills.
  • 1 years knowledge of environmental management in areas such as air, wastewater, solid & hazardous waste, toxic chemical management, and
    regulations.
  • 1 years demonstrated problem solving ability including application of relevant tools (i.e., PDCA, Ishikawa, 8-D).
  • German language skills (preferred).
