Job description

Job Purpose:

The Warehouse Assistant supports the production of plastic compounds by performing material handling tasks according to prescribed methods and criteria. A Warehouse Assistant will routinely destage finished goods material from the production area, inspect packaged material for shipment, prepare labels and load trucks with finished goods material, and assist other personnel with respect to plant housekeeping duties.

Work Environment:

A Warehouse Assistant regularly performs duties in the warehouse and production areas, an industrial environment that requires use of personal protective equipment including safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, steel toed shoes, work gloves, protective sleeves and/or clothing, respiratory protection, and other specialized protective equipment all as directed by the Company’s operating procedures, safety procedures, and other instructions provided by management. The production environment includes equipment operating at very high temperatures, often resulting in temperatures inside the production area that are higher than ambient temperatures. The employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts, sharp equipment components and tools, hot surfaces, hot plastic, hot water, wet or slippery floor conditions, airborne dust and particles, and outdoor weather conditions. The employee may work in high places using fall arrest equipment.

Typical work schedule includes 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week (overtime is required according to production demand). The Warehouse Assistant is expected to work additional hours to perform the duties of the position as the need arises (under reasonable safety considerations). Work instructions are provided in written form or spoken, generally in English.

Essential Functions and Requirements:

Essential tasks performed by the Warehouse Assistant include but are not limited to: inspecting and preparing packages of finished goods for shipment by staging the materials in the proper location using documented procedures and other instructions provided by management; conducting a review of bill of lading documents to ensure accurate verification of packages to be shipped; performing tasks in a manner that ensures compliance with all safety, environmental, product quality, and plant performance criteria; properly documenting operational activity according to established procedures and other instructions provided by management; and communicating to management and co-workers the existence of any damaged or defective material or any damaged or defective equipment needing repair in order to maintain safe, reliable, and efficient operations. The employee will assist management personnel with problem resolution and will document any resulting actions. The employee will ensure compliance to the Company’s environmental standards with regard to the handling, storage and disposal of universal and special waste.

The employee will also perform the following essential functions in connection with the following.

Material handling tasks; frequent use of a forklift, pallet jack or similar device to transport material and other items; visual inspection of materials stored in packages or other containers as directed by management; manual transfer of material using a bucket or similar device; assembly, filling and/or disassembly of packages; repackaging, sealing and labeling of containers as needed; and general organization and cleanup of work areas. The employee will also perform other tasks as directed by management.

The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions listed above. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands & fingers to handle and feel objects, tools, and controls; reach repetitively with arms & hands; talk; and hear. The employee is required to walk, sit, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl and stoop. The employee will frequently lift items up to 55 pounds from floor level to waist height and use devices that require a pushing or pulling force up to 120 pounds. The employee will climb ladders and may perform tasks at heights greater than 6 feet and stand on concrete floor or platform regularly throughout an 8 hour shift. Specific vision abilities required in this job include color perception, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee must also have a satisfactory attendance record and be responsible for the safe operation of all equipment described above and the safe handling of the materials present in the production area and the warehouses.

Additional Responsibilities:

The employee must maintain awareness of (and perform tasks in compliance with) all internal policies, procedures and practices, as described in the Handbook for Employees, all Safety and Environmental Manuals, and all applicable OSHA, EPA and IDEM regulations, and other instructions provided by management.

The employee must identify and report the following to management: equipment defects or malfunctions, suspect or damaged material, material spills, issues related to the operation, maintenance and inspection of forklifts or other material handling equipment, and safety, environmental and quality incidents.

Effective verbal communication with co-workers, management and third parties is required. Certain reports and other communication will be required in writing, generally in English.

Pre-Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED equivalent; produce acceptable scores on the following ACT Work Keys tests: Applied Mathematics, Graphic Literacy and Workplace Documents. Preferred candidates should have prior work history in a warehousing environment and have strong inventory management and forklift skills.

Career Development:

Position is eligible for Chemtrusion’s certification program. With appropriate tenure, training, and available openings, may advance to Production Operator or Bulk Shipment Coordinator.
