Job description

A position has been declared open in the Weber School District at Wahlquist Jr High for an Library Technology Specialist. This position is for 8 hours per day, 9 months per year.
This position is for the upcoming school year 2024-25.

The Library Technology Specialist position will be guided by four commitments: 1) A commitment to a culture of literacy (including digital/information literacy); 2) A commitment to the day-to-day operations of a successful library/resource center; 3) A commitment to digital citizenship and 4) A commitment to helping the school's staff and students successfully integrate technology.
Library Technology Specialists hold a pivotal position in junior high or high schools, where their responsibilities encompass running the day-to-day operations of the library including making teachers, staff and students aware of available learning resources in both digital and print format. In addition to managing the library, these specialists actively engage with students and staff to foster a strong understanding of digital citizenship and instill a culture of reading and literacy. Collaborating closely with the school community, these coaches provide valuable guidance on the effective integration of technology and information literacy. They strive to engage students in learning, enhance learning with options that aren't possible without the use of technology, and help classroom teachers extend learning in ways that relate to the student's real world. Moreover, Library Technology Specialists work diligently to ensure a comprehensive approach that includes efficiently managing the library, championing reading culture, and assisting in the effort to coach effective technology integration.
Required: Valid Utah Secondary Teaching license along with a library endorsement AND have or be willing to obtain the Education Technology endorsement from UEN.
Employee Evaluation: will be conducted/led by the Digital Teaching & Learning Director working closely with the principal/school administrator.
Contract: 190 Day Contract. Will work with the Digital Teaching & Learning Director and principal to track and justify the additional 10 days of contract time.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Culture of Literacy -

  • Promote reading among students by developing and implementing literacy programs and initiatives to promote a culture of reading and learning within the library and school.
  • Make instructional resources and information available to students, teachers, and staff through a systematically developed collection within the school and through access to resources outside the school.
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate literacy and information literacy skills into the curriculum.
  • Conduct regular library orientations and workshops to educate students on effective research techniques and information evaluation.

Day-to-day Library/Resource Operation -
  • Develop and maintain a quality collection of physical books as well as digital and e-books.
  • Inform and instruct staff of new materials, equipment, and services that meet their information needs and promote their use.
  • Effectively develop and manage library media budgets under the direction of the principal and Digital Teaching & Learning Director.
  • Coordinate with vendors to acquire new library materials and manage the budget effectively.
  • Organize the distribution of equipment, materials, audiovisual materials, etc. to teachers, students, and apply efficient record keeping and inventory procedures to maintain a quality collection and well-maintained equipment.
  • Oversee library media aides (in the high schools).
  • Develop long-term goals and plans for the school library media program, consistent with school, district, and state core curriculum.
  • Assist in implementing the Utah State Library/Media Core Curriculum, planning jointly with classroom teachers to ensure that information and research skills are correlated with classroom instruction.
  • Curate a diverse collection of books and resources that cater to different reading levels, interests, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Oversee the circulation of library materials, ensuring an efficient check-in and check-out process.
  • Manage the library catalog and ensure accurate and up-to-date records of all materials.
  • Maintain an organized and welcoming library space, including shelving, displays, and seating arrangements.
  • Work with teachers and students to show them how to access database and periodical information from the Utah Online Library, UEN as well as district-provided digital resources.

Digital Citizenship Lead/Internet Safety Facilitator -
  • Lead and maintain schoolwide, asynchronous training on Digital Citizenship (or other matters related to technology integration) via a course in the LMS for both faculty members and students.
  • Oversee Data and reporting regarding Digital Citizenship training in the school.
  • Develop and deliver workshops and community information sessions, in collaboration with the Digital Teaching and Learning Dept., to educate and inform students, staff, and faculty members about responsible and ethical online behavior.
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate digital citizenship concepts into the curriculum throughout all disciplines and subject areas.
  • Monitor and enforce acceptable use policies for technology being utilized within the library.
  • Stay informed about current trends and issues related to digital citizenship and technology ethics through ISTE, Common Sense Media, USBE, and other major digital citizenship outlets.
  • Work with the school administration to facilitate the teaching of Digital Citizenship school-wide.

Technology Specialist/Coaching -
  • Meet with teachers to jointly plan, co-teach, and evaluate instruction to help them use a variety of instructional methods using technology with different groups.
  • Collaborate with teachers, PLC teams, and grade-level teams to assist with using technology for the purposes of classroom remediation and differentiation.
  • Work in conjunction with the building edtech coach(es) and the district Digital Teaching & Learning Specialists to conduct faculty training and support on technologies and initiatives supported by the district such as new tools or strategies for enriched delivery and engagement.
  • Provide leadership and coaching in the assessment, evaluation, and implementation of information and instructional technologies.
  • Assist in content creation for the district EdTech training website and professional development regarding technology training district-wide.
  • Assist district and school administration in providing technology training and inservice for school teachers and staff__including assisting in the summer conference if applicable.
  • Provide training and support for teachers on integrating technology into their instructional practices.
  • Stay current on emerging educational technologies and assess their suitability for classroom use.

General -
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
  • Other Duties as assigned due to the ever-changing nature of educational technology.
  • Maintain professional media skills.
