Job description

The Vice President of Risk Control provides strategic leadership to the UFG Risk Control department. The individual in this role will develop and execute best practices to mitigate underwriting risk. The VP of Risk Control is also responsible for creating an annual operating plan and budget, managing senior members of the Risk Control team, overseeing the implementation of Risk Control best practices, and collaborating with other key stakeholders to ensure Risk Control practices are driving positive business outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and visionary leadership to the UFG Risk Control organization and drive thought leadership for the Underwriting organization.
  •  Provide overall direction, identify scope, and support the development of Risk Control services, products, and marketing initiatives to align with the underwriting strategy for the industry and specific business units.
  • Lead continuous development opportunities to deepen technical expertise, resulting in improved decision-making that enables profitable results.
  •  Build and deliver risk engineering content for the benefit of agents and insureds to drive business opportunities for UFG, built on the underwriting and Risk Control expertise of the company.
  • Manage the distribution and quality of Risk Control assessment and service work.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key agency partners, ensuring UFG can deliver intended outcomes to the customer.
  • Conduct occasional risk assessments and manage a small portfolio of key division-level Risk Control service accounts.
  • Represent UFG and Risk Control at industry meetings and marketing events.
  • Collaborate with other department and business unit leaders to ensure alignment of strategic initiatives.
  • Other duties include delivering an effective human capital strategy, prioritizing employee development, and providing accountability and resources for employees to achieve organizational goals.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university.
  • Degree in safety, risk management, and STEM (i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) are preferred.

Certifications/Designations:

  • One or more of the following designations is desired: ALCM, ARM, ASP, RRE, SMS, SSH.

Experience:

  • 15+ years of related risk management work experience
  • 7-10 years of people management experience.

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Mastery of the Risk Control discipline including risk management principles and risk-reduction interventions as well as emerging trends, risk exposures control measures and best practices across various industry and segments.
  • A visionary, solution-oriented leader with the ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems, motivate and develop staff, recognize and execute team strategy.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong influencing and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to think strategically with supporting analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to deal with ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated successful ability to organize and prioritize work to ensure timely deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively build relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Experience influencing and collaborating at the executive level.
  • Working knowledge of the following published standards is required:
    • FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration)
    • NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)
    • NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health)
    • OSHA (Occupation Health and Safety Administration)

    Working Conditions:

    • Office 25%, Field 75%
    • Requires some overnight travel (up to 25%)
    • Occasional exposure to heat, cold, noise, and dust
    • Occasional exposure to industrial machinery, electrical equipment, and construction equipment
    • Valid U.S. Driver’s License and clean driving record is required
