JOB DESCRIPTION:
Job Summary
Officer position responsible for providing overall underwriting excellence and integrity through adherence to underwriting best practices for multiple products in the Construction Business Unit within the South Central Region. Directs the implementation and execution of strategic and operational objectives, in accordance with the company's long-term strategic plans.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
1. The VP, Regional Underwriting Manager has full accountability and ownership for underwriting and for achieving production and profitability goals for an assigned region and aligns with top distribution firms to promote profitable growth opportunities.
2. This position works within their delegated underwriting authority and guidelines to drive underwriting, operational and transactional excellence throughout the underwriting chain and across their region.
3. Delegates authority to subordinate underwriters and partners with the enterprise Property and Casualty groups to govern referral thresholds, underwriting authority and establish clear paths of accountability and ownership throughout their respective hierarchy.
4. This role will partner with the SVP and VP level sales and production leaders within their territory to maximize profitable growth opportunities with agents & brokers.
5. Leads, directs and has full management accountability for staff in area of responsibility with an emphasis on talent management, succession planning and skill development in accordance with strategic direction.
6. This leader will have direct ownership of all aspects of underwriter performance and accountability to promote a high performing culture into their respective regions
7. Drives implementation of strategic and operational objectives with significant impact on the short-term success of multiple products within a geographic region.
8. Analyzes underwriting performance based on quarterly regional evaluations of profit, production, rate, retention, agency performance and cross-sell opportunities. Provides results to members of the management team and develops plans to resolve issues.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Typically SVP or above
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
1. Mastery of underwriting discipline and knowledge in the insurance field and a broad understanding of the critical issues in other related areas.
2. Advanced communication skills which are critical to building consensus across area of influence (external and/or internal relationships), teams and/or matrix environment.
3. Strong leadership and management skills demonstrating integrity and professionalism.
4. Ability to drive results by identifying and resolving significant problems within scope of responsibility.
5. Senior level knowledge of the insurance industry, its products and services.
6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 and other business-related software.
7. Strong knowledge of assigned business line and insurance industry.
Technical Requirements

  • Direct experience in large project, large contractors (ENR 400) and wrap up business, with proven track record of success with the Top 6 Construction distributors in the industry.
  • Master level proficiency in loss rating and diverse program design to drive profitability at the account level.
  • Ability to pre-qualify manuscript wording requests with recommendations.
  • Expertise in all contractor types from mid to large, and providing consultation on risk selection of all types.

Industry Knowledge
  • Proven experience in the entire value chain of the Construction economy, infrastructure and ecosystem, from Owners/Developers, to designers, to contractors and suppliers.
  • Knowledge of professional liability and builders risk in driving total account solutions as the lead executive for the territory.
  • Stays current with economic factors affecting the industry and makes strategic adjustments as appropriate.
  • Monitor specific industry related competitor activity and competitive landscape to ensure real time differentiation of the CNA Construction value proposition.

Marketplace Presence
  • Has proven executive presence, proven relationships and brand in Construction, specifically within the Top 6 global distribution firms.
  • Regional and National recognition in Construction marketplace to take on national relationship management role in coordination and execution of strategic priorities.
  • Lead national or regional meetings with key stakeholders as the featured speaker in articulating vision, strategy and engagement plans.

Education & Experience
1. Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in a related discipline, or equivalent.
2. Typically a minimum of 12 years of related work experience, with seven years management experience.
3. Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation preferred.
