Job description

The VP of Comms & Community Impact will lead a high-performance team of Communications and Community relations professionals. The department's objectives are to maintain an excellent reputation for the Spirit brand, increase awareness of the Spirit brand, drive credibility for our club's business and sporting operations, develop strategies for player storytelling and support revenue goals.

The VP of Communications & Community Impact will:
  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance the Washington Spirit's vision, brand identity, and staff/players; broaden awareness; and increase visibility
  • Create marketing/public relations strategy that will allow The Washington Spiritto cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization.
  • Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them
  • Serve as communications counselor to Washington Spirit leadership
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed
  • Lead in developing long term community-wide goals and indicators
  • Work with staff to effectively manage commitments with community partners and ensure all contractual commitments are met, while building and strengthening the brand image and relationships
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications & Community Impact functions including budgeting, planning and staff development Team Development/Management

Our ideal candidate has:
  • 10+ years experience in Communications and/or Community Impact, preferably in sports.
  • Proven track record of delivering high impact earned media results to drive business.
  • Deep relationships with relevant journalists and Community organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience with risk, issues and crisis management and disseminating sensitive news.
  • Thorough knowledge of communication and Community Impact best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing high- performance teams with measurable results.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills and ability to seamlessly working across all departments within the organization.
  • Strategic self-starter, entrepreneurial with hands-on approach towards business
  • Understanding and knowledge of the DC market and landscape.
  • Past agency experience required.

Location:
This role is primarily based at our Falls Church, VA office, with occasional work in Washington, D.C. Our front office team follows a hybrid arrangement, requiring presence in the office 3 days a week.
