POSITION SUMMARY


The Vice President, Global Learning & Leadership Development will play a pivotal role in preparing and equipping United Way staff and board volunteers to (1) address crucial and evolving community needs; (2) lead local United Ways in their next era of impact, relevance, and sustainability; and (3) advance the transformation of United Way’s global Network.


As a member of the United Way Worldwide Network Resilience team, the Vice President will be a leader in redefining and reshaping learning and Leadership Development in the United Way Network of more than 1,000 Local United Ways in 36 countries.


The Vice President will collaborate closely with United Way Worldwide and Network colleagues to use learning and professional development to advance organizational imperatives, including the Network’s strategic and cultural transformation; revenue diversification; impact and equity agendas; the Thriving United Way initiative; enhanced Network engagement; best-practice and knowledge sharing; and building a high-impact, interconnected global Network.


The Vice President will lead the transformation of learning design and delivery to make top-quality professional development affordable and accessible to United Way staff and board volunteers throughout the global Network. The leader will introduce compelling new learning methods to engage audiences and strengthen performance across generations and geographies. The Vice President will oversee administration of professional-development practices, policies, and processes on behalf of the global Network and within United Way Worldwide.


Additionally, the Vice President will partner with the Senior Vice President, Network Resilience to design and lead the delivery of United Way Worldwide’s Next-Generation Leaders Initiative, an ambitious global endeavor to prepare high-performing, high-potential early career staff to both lead their organizations and shape the social sector for the next decade and beyond. The Initiative will include collaboration and immersive learning with partner organizations, best-in-class executive development, and activation of multiple team-based action-learning projects around the world. The Initiative will produce case studies, demonstration projects to improve local communities, and a thriving, global learning network of emergent and senior leaders. This will be the first of a series of new leadership-development programs for the United Way leaders that the Vice President will shape and advance.


The successful candidate will be an accomplished strategic, hands-on, and transformational leader who will bring exceptional skills and relevant experience in executive development, adult learning, program design and delivery, data-driven business acumen, collaboration, executive presentation, communication, building strategic partnerships, and establishing a high-impact learning network. The individual must be able to excel in a global, federated work environment, and bring strong cross-cultural acumen to engage effectively with colleagues and partners around the world.


This position can be located remotely, but orients to a United States Eastern Time work schedule.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION


An individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below at a satisfactory level:


  • Upgraded Learning and Leadership Development
    – Evaluate and redesign United Way Worldwide’s learning-and-leadership-development strategy, processes, and portfolio to make professional development affordable, accessible, and engaging to all United Way staff and board volunteers around the world. Work with United Way Worldwide colleagues to align learning and Leadership Development with strategic priorities, including the Thriving United Way initiative. Lead the redesign of specific solutions as required, including through new delivery methods. Establish global standards for learning and Leadership Development that also encourage local innovation and adaptation.
  • Next-Generation Leaders Initiative – Partner with the SVP Network Resilience to lead the design, development, and delivery of a new global professional-development initiative. Develop and manage the curriculum for a two-year, global, cohort-based program that includes executive education (year 1) and team-based action-learning projects (year 2). Lead the participant recruitment, delivery, administration, and measurement of the end-to-end participant experience, including showcasing program results across the social sector.
  • Learning and Leadership-Development Management and Administration – Lead the creation and management of a learning portfolio, including Leadership Development, to advance United Way Worldwide organizational priorities. Partner with colleagues in Global Network Advancement, Knowledge Management, Events, Learning & Leadership Development, and Finance to oversee the efficient management and administration of learning and Leadership Development at United Way Worldwide. Play a leadership role in identifying, selecting, installing, and managing a new learning management system, in concert with the introduction of a new knowledge-management platform and approach. Oversee the next generation of financial administration of learning to make it affordable and accessible for all United Way staff and board, including associated change management, policies, and processes. Lead the oversight of the Learning & Leadership Development budget.
  • Staff-Credentialing Program – Lead the design, development, deployment, and management of a new internal career-pathing and credentialing infrastructure for United Way staff, to support the attraction, development, and retention of talent across the global Network. Align the program with the Thriving United Way framework and external credentialing standards. Lead the identification and creation of learning experiences to support staff credentialing, from entry-level to senior United Way roles.
  • Global Learning Network – Serve as a leader in the development of a high-impact, interconnected network of United Way and partner-organization learners to strengthen the contributions of the civil society in addressing critical local and global issues. Use the Next-Generation Leaders Initiative as the basis for the first generation of the learning network, and align it with the emergent United Way initiatives: United Way’s strategic transformation; Thriving United Way; and the United Way Network Advisory Council’s Best Practices and Innovation Project. Collaborate with United Way leaders to inform the development of a global United Way strategy to improve knowledge sharing and knowledge management.


JOB REQUIREMENTS


Minimum requirements include:


  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience. Masters degree preferred.
  • 10 years of expert-level, relevant work experience in a similar role.
  • Proven, relevant expertise and contemporary skills in executive education, adult learning, and learning design and delivery for a top-tier professional audience, including virtual instructor-led training. Relevant professional certifications a plus.
  • Proven senior-level experience in presenting to, influencing, and engaging effectively with nonprofit CEOs, C-level leaders, professionals, and high-potential leaders.
  • Relevant experience in engaging with a global audience, and in demonstrating cultural acumen across multiple dimensions of diversity.
  • Exceptional abilities in administering multiple, complex projects in a fast-moving, dynamic environment and with aggressive timelines.
  • Outstanding capabilities in engaging in hands-on, detailed work in learning design and delivery, often with limited support.
  • Five years of people-management experience and evidence of ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams with cross-functional interdependencies. Track record of effectively leading a performance- and outcomes-based staff.
  • Proven experience in learning measurement and reporting, with a strong emphasis on data-driven decision-making.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, presentations, and media.
  • Strong orientation to detail and exemplary execution.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with many types of leaders and contributors.
  • Strong understanding of networks, both as a leader and a contributor.
  • Experience in working effectively within a global, federated work environment.
  • Exceptional business acumen and budget-management skills.
  • Demonstrated success in crafting and implementing strategies to advance high-stakes agendas in a complex, dynamic business environment.
  • Established relationships with leaders and influencers in nonprofit, corporate, and government organizations a significant plus.

ALARY STATEMENT


The budgeted lifespan salary range for this position is currently $180,000 to $190,000 per year. The targeted salary for this hire is $185,000. Proffered salaries are determined by several factors including applicant’s knowledge, skills, experience, position, equity, and market.
