Job Description

We are seeking a Vice President, Casualty Construction Claims Leader to manage Construction-related claims within Sompo International based out of New York, NY. This position reports to the Senior Vice President, Head of Casualty Claims. The successful candidate will be able to manage a team of claim professionals focused on the handling of Construction-related claims, driving best practice compliance, superior customer servicing and providing valuable and pertinent loss trend and portfolio information to the business and senior claims management.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Successfully manage the Casualty Construction claims team, as well as all related systems and processes
  • Evaluate exposures and make substantive claim decisions for claims and as needed on other lines of business
  • Provide direction and guidance for coverage, liability and damages analysis, with a particular emphasis on early identification of severity, coverage issues and application of effective resolution strategies.
  • Proactively identify trends and exposures that may affect the Casualty Construction portfolio, developing strong relationships internally and externally with relevant stakeholders
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of exposures to Underwriting and Senior Management
  • Work with Actuary, Cede Re, Underwriting, Operations, Finance to ensure timely reporting on trends, reserves, various claim metrics, etc.
  • Attend various industry conferences, possibly as a speaker/presenter, publishing on current claim trends and issues and assisting other offices on complex claims
  • Other duties as required by management
  • Some travel as required

Skills & Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 15 years' experience required in claims or litigation management with a career history of assuming roles with increasing responsibility
  • Law degree required
  • Preference will be given if experience was at both a law firm and with an insurance carrier
  • Management experience as a team leader or supervisor of claim professionals required
  • Proven experience in the successful direct handling of high exposure claims and cases presenting significant coverage issues
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and drive coverage acumen, technical claim handling and customer service skills.
  • Experience handling New York Labor Law, Construction Defect and other Construction-related claim types.
  • Meaningful legal review experience and policy drafting experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish close working relationship with external and internal stakeholders
  • Strong negotiating, analytical, written, and organizational skills
  • Excellent management, marketing, and communication skills
  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook and various in-house claims systems -Guidewire, Genius, ImageRight is a plus.

Salary Range: $145,000- $225,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
