The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) isthe state of Florida’s social services agency. The agency oversees services for child safety, fostering, adoption, domestic violence, adult protective services, refugees, homelessness, mental health, substance abuse, childcare providers, human trafficking and public assistance. The agency’s mission is to work in partnership with local communities to protect the vulnerable, promote strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advance personal and family recovery and resiliency.

Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families. The department’s mission is to “work in partnership with local communities to protect the vulnerable, promote strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advance personal and family recovery and resiliency.”

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as Volunteer Services Specialist. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgment, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail-oriented.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • This position requires lifting, pulling, and squatting.
  • Duties of this position require the incumbent to be knowledgeable of and utilize the principles of Total Quality Management.
  • The Volunteer Services Specialist is directly responsible to the Volunteer Service Center Specialist.
  • This position is responsible for providing support services and direct assistance to the Volunteer Services Center Specialist to facilitate the completion of tasks.
  • Responsible for maintaining a positive working relationship with all appropriate hospital departments/units and volunteers in order to facilitate the achievement of hospital goals.
  • Assists Volunteer Services Center Specialist with assigned Hospital activities such as Christmas activities, fundraising, Staff Day, FSECC, Family Day, Halloween activities, mentoring, etc.
  • Interviews, screens, and refers prospective volunteers for assignments throughout Florida State Hospital.
  • Operates the clothing store. Schedules volunteers to assist with store; organizes and arranges clothing; schedules and opens clothing store for escorted residents.
  • Ensures clothing store meets fire code standards.
  • Accepts and records donations; responds to the donor with appropriate correspondence (i.e. thank you letter, tax-exempt form, etc.).
  • Serves as a receptionist/hostess to staff and visitors for Volunteer Services and the Chapel.
  • Prepares correspondence, pamphlets, letters, booklets, etc. for distribution to community organizations, schools, businesses, etc. to provide education on volunteer activities.
  • Plans, coordinates and conducts institutional tours for prospective volunteers, college and professional groups, individuals, etc.
  • Maintains records of all VOLUNTEER SERVICES and prepares reports according to departmental guidelines.
  • Responsible for scheduling usage of various hospital facilities to include the John G. Johnson Pavilion, Cypress Cove Nature Park, Large and Small Chapels.
  • Works with community groups and individuals to establish and support service projects.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communication.
  • Ability to interview, screen and refer prospective volunteers for assignments.
  • Ability to encourage others to volunteer their time.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and participate in conducting institutional tours.
  • Ability to work with others in establishing service projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in volunteer, community, social or rehabilitative services, employment, personnel, training, education, fundraising or public relations.
  • College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for each year of the required experience.

Preference will be given to applicants who have:

  • Experience in working in Word publications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Valid Class E Drivers License.
