To enhance the productivity of the police department in areas assigned. Placement of volunteers will correspond with the skills and interests of the Volunteer and the needs of the community as well as the Police Department. Volunteer's assignments will be reviewed by the Police Volunteer Coordinator upon receipt of the application. Areas of interest for the Police Volunteers in the Patrol Section are Courier Service, Speed Trailer Deployment, Parking Enforcement, Community Patrol, Close House Watch, Special Events, Project LifeSaver, and Volunteer Response Team.

The following duties are illustrative for this position. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Provides customer service to incoming customers either in person or over the telephone.
  • Courier: Pick up and deliver documents and items at the courthouse, jail, sheriff's office, state attorney's office, 9-1-1 center and other locations as needed.
  • Speed Trailer: Deployment of the department's speed trailers to area where speeding has been reported.
  • Parking Enforcement: Enforce the handicap and fire lane parking areas in the city shopping plazas. A mandatory "parking enforcement specialist" course is required.
  • Community Patrol: Uniformed volunteers patrolling in their own neighborhoods and surrounding areas as the "eyes and ears" of the Department. Completion of a community patrol class is required.
  • Close House Watch: Volunteer patrol checks of homes that are not occupied. Service must be requested.
  • Special Events: Assist with department and city events, such as National Night Out.
  • Project LifeSaver: Visits to Project Lifesaver clients to change transmitter batteries.
  • Volunteer Response Team: Visit homes in areas of crime sprees and "hot spots" distributing crime prevention information.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to participate
Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License and maintenance of a clean driving history.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be of good moral character.
  • Must pass a background investigation.
  • This volunteer position requires commitment to at least 3 hours per week.

  • The volunteer must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this Job, the volunteer is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The volunteer is frequently exposed to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, uneven surfaces, heights, and stressful situations.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
