Job description

Are you a keen birder with an eye for a good photo willing to spend some time contributing to conservation from the comfort of your own home? If so, we need your help!

BirdLife International is the world’s largest nature conservation partnership. Through our unique local-to-global approach, we deliver high impact and long-term conservation for the benefit of nature and people.

Why we want you

Are you a keen birder with an eye for a good photo willing to spend some time contributing to conservation from the comfort of your own home? If so, we need your help!

BirdLife International recently commenced an exciting project to redevelop our DataZone into a cutting-edge conservation knowledge hub. The platform will include new and improved features such as interactive maps, dashboards and factsheets that will facilitate easier access to data on bird species and important sites for their conservation.

As part of this project, we will be enriching our species factsheets by adding photos of each bird species. We are therefore looking for volunteers to help source and catalogue images of all 11,000+ bird species worldwide.

What will you be doing?

Your role will involve:

  • Searching online for suitable photos
  • Contacting photographers to ask for permission to use their photos
  • Checking identification of species
  • Cataloguing photos in Microsoft Excel
  • Organising image files

This work can be done remotely from anywhere in the world, as long as you have access to a computer and an internet connection. We would ask you to commit to at least 10 hours a week, or more if available, but we can be flexible with days and work around your schedule. This work will be ongoing until the end of July 2024, or until all photos have been sourced and catalogued.

The skills that you need

  • Excellent bird identification skills
  • An eye for a good image
  • Good written communication skills
  • Good organisational skills, including the ability to work independently and manage your own time
  • Good computer skills, including the use of the internet and Microsoft Excel

What’s in it for you?

You will be contributing to a project that will directly benefit international bird conservation by making BirdLife’s world-leading science more accessible to decision-makers and conservation practitioners. If you are a photographer yourself, this could also be an opportunity to have your photos published (with credit) on a high-profile website.

How to apply

If you are interested in this opportunity, please complete the application form and email it to volunteer@birdlife.org
