As Nevada's largest and most active organization devoted to the protection and advancement of civil rights and civil liberties, the ACLU of Nevada is one of the state's most effective public interest nonprofits. The organization works on a broad range of issues, including but not limited to free speech, election protection, education reform, drug law reform, women's issues, prisoners' rights, immigrant rights, the rights of the unsheltered, criminal justice reform, and LGBTQIA+ rights. To learn more about the work of the ACLU of Nevada, the principles we uphold, and some of the cases that we are currently litigating, please visitwww.aclunv.org.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The ACLU of Nevada's Legal Internship/Externship Program gives law students the opportunity to work as part of our legal team and explore a nuanced, exciting, and challenging potential career as a civil rights lawyer. During the first semester of this Internship/Externship program, a law student volunteers their time but may receive academic credit for their work. If that law student's work measures up to our expectations, the student may be invited to continue their Internship/Externship and receive compensation for such.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Research of current federal, state, and local laws
  • Drafting documents for litigation
  • Engaging in discovery
  • Attending meetings
  • Potentially performing legal observations
  • Complete a minimum of one complex legal writing project
  • Assist with various advocacy efforts

APPLICATION INFORMATION

The ACLU seeks individuals who have a demonstrated commitment to justice and to our community. We don't care much about grades and probably are unlikely to ask you for a transcript. We do need you to be able to write reasonably well. Flexibility and the ability to work in a team are a must. Students with a particular interest in public interest work, constitutional law, and legal writing and with a track record of public service will make for competitive candidates. Students with an interest or connection to Nevada will also enhance hiring likelihood. If your cover letter doesn't detail why you would be a good fit for our organization, you likely won't receive an interview.

To apply submit:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume
  • A legal writing sample no more than 10 pages
  • Contact information for at least three references
