Expected Work Schedule: This is a full-time position (40 hours per week). Typical working hours are 8 am - 5 pm, though are flexible, and this position will need to work some evenings, weekends, and overnight travel.
Job Location: Anita B Gorman Discovery Ctr (KANSA1) Note: This position will have a frequent in-person need in the Kansas City (MO) area, though will also work in the central and northern areas of the state, such as Columbia, MO. The successful candidate may reside in the Northwest, Northeast, Kansas City, or Central regions, and the primary job location can be negotiable.

Summary/Objective
Provide support and customer service for volunteer program training and events.
Essential Job Duties
  • Assist the regional Volunteer Engagement specialist with implementation of the Stream Team and Master Naturalist programs in the Kansas City, Northwest, Northeast, and Central Regions of the state. This includes the cities of Kansas City, Columbia, St. Joseph, Sedalia, Kirksville, Jefferson City, and Hannibal as examples. Note: A frequent in-person presence is needed in the Kansas City area, and the position is planned to work out of the Kansas City area. Though a successful candidate may live in any of the previously mentioned areas and a different primary work location can be discussed and subject to office availability.
  • Develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with Department of Conservation's (MDC) resource management, education, and community conservation staff with the assigned regions; and with Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) state parks, air and water resources staff within the assigned regions.
  • Collaborate with DNR's Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Stream Team staff and MDC's Volunteer Education & Citizen Science Coordinator to assist volunteers interested in citizen science projects.
  • Strategize with other Volunteer Engagement team members on how to best recruit, retain, and reactivate volunteers.
  • Recruit new volunteers into the Stream Team and Master Naturalist programs.
  • Create and deliver educational programs for the Stream Team and Master Naturalist programs.
  • Create original content for social media pages and seasonal newsletters for the Stream Team and Master Naturalist programs, including, but not limited to, brochures, fliers, and presentational materials.
  • Provide excellent customer service for Stream Team and Master Naturalist volunteers, including responding to emails and voicemails promptly and with enthusiasm.
  • Assist Stream Team watershed associations, Master Naturalist Chapters, and affiliate partners with delivering educational and environmental stewardship projects. Affiliate partners include DNR, University of Missouri - Extension, Conservation Federation of Missouri, and Stream Teams United.
  • Assist with making initial welcome calls to new volunteers and checking in on inactive volunteers.
  • Provide information and assistance to Stream Teams on general stream stewardship projects, litter pickups, water quality monitoring, and other activities undertaken by individual Stream Teams.
  • Assist regional Volunteer Engagement team members in the setting up of Stream Team Associations along watershed boundaries and new Master Naturalist chapters.
  • Evening, overnight, and weekend work will be expected.

Ancillary Job Duties

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree or Course Work in Education, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or the Natural Resources preferred but not necessary.
  • One to three (1-3) years of experience in the natural resource or community science field preferred.
  • Experience with Office 365 products, Adobe products, and video conferencing platforms.
  • A valid, current driver's license.

  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

Work Environment
  • Frequently work in a standard office environment.

  • Frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Multi-tasking in an office environment, often sitting for long periods at a time.

Exemption Status/Special Notes
This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
Salaried and hourly employees are expected to use a mobile device-cellular phone for Department business, as needed.
