NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:
The primary responsibility of an Industrial Arts teacher is to develop in each student an insight and
understanding of industry and its place in our society; to discover and develop talents of students in the
technical fields; to develop practical problem-solving skills related to the materials and processes of
industry; and to develop in each student skill in the safe use of tools and machines. The employee must
adhere to the State of Alaska Code of Ethics of the Education Profession.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE SKILLS:
  • Alaska Type A teaching certificate.
  • AWS Welding Certification, or other comparable welding skills certification.
  • Effective student management skills.
  • Knowledge and support of district/state standards.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills; openness towards parent conferences.
  • Experience with technology in the various machines in a typical wood and metals shop.
  • Knowledge of CAD software systems, and ability to teach these programs to students.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity to the developmental stages and well-being of children.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work with teacher teams in delivering and integrating curriculum.
  • Ability to analyze data to improve instruction.
  • Experience implementing performance-based assessments.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
Related teaching experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES:
Possess or able to obtain an Alaska Type A Teaching Certificate
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Teach skills and knowledge in one or more courses in auto mechanics, drafting, metals, machine shop,
woodworking, power mechanics, or general shop to secondary students, using the course of study
adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
2. Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative
regulations and procedures of the school district.
3. Develop lesson plans and organize class time so that preparation, instruction, shop work, and clean-up
activities can be accomplished within the allotted time.
4. Demonstrate industrial materials, equipment, tools, and processes, using standard or teacher-prepared
models, mock-ups, sketches, and other instructional aids.
5. Guide students in the selection of appropriate elective projects or experiments.
6. Maintain a record of student attendance and make daily reports of students absent each period. Assign
appropriate discipline referrals and scholarship marks.
7. Instruct students in the use of eye protection and safety guards, and in the use, care, and safe
operation of tools, machines, and equipment.
8. Maintain control of storage and use of school-owned property. Make minor adjustments and request
repairs to tools and equipment as required.
9. Establish and maintain standards of student conduct needed to provide an orderly, safe, and productive
environment in an activity-type classroom with many potential hazards.
10. Keep informed of the industrial community's job entry requirements and instruct students in the
rudiments of getting and retaining these jobs.
11. Evaluate each student's performance, knowledge, and skills.
12. Select and requisition instructional aids and equipment, maintain required inventory records, and
make purchases as authorized.
13. Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities.
14. Communicate with parents and school counselors on the individual student's progress.
15. Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping
students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
16. Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
17. Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs. Must work with advisory committees in
the development and evaluation of specific Vocational Education programs, following the program and
guidelines outlined in the Career and Technical Education system.
18. Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

Classroom Culture
  • Create an instructional environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interest, and abilities of students.
  • Adhere to safety rules as they apply to the shop, machines and procedures.
  • Develop a code of conduct for the class which is consistent with established administrative policies and develop rules of student behavior which are enforced in a fair and just manner.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitude and interests of students, including current technology and whole-group/small group learning.

Planning and Data Analysis
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of established District curriculum goals, establish and communicate clear objectives to the students for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Strive by instruction and action to employ the District's philosophy of education, instructional goals and objectives, and performance expectations.
  • Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.

Student and Family Relationships
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provide progress reports as required, and communicate with parents as needed or as directed by the principal.
  • Seek the support of district specialists when concern regarding student progress arises.
  • Provide age-appropriate communication with students on instructional expectations and keep students informed of their progress in meeting those expectations.
  • Attend IEP, Section 504, or other related meetings necessary for student assessment and/or

Industrial Arts/Vocational Education
  • Compliance with federal and/or state law.
  • Personal Organization and Effectiveness
  • Maintain specialized equipment within the shop and related instructional areas.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the law, District policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Prepare for classes and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Ensure instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and conducive to learning and that materials are in good condition and accessible to students.
  • Ensure that fees for courses are collected, where applicable.

Contribution to School Community
  • Attend established traditional school-sponsored activities (i.e., back-to-school night, open house, and other activities customarily attended by classroom teachers and/or faculty members.)
  • Attend District meetings and serve on District committees as required.
  • Establish partnerships with the community as appropriate in support of the career and technical education program.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the building principal or immediate supervisor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
