Visual Journalist And Assistant Audience Engagement Editor

The Embarcadero Media Foundation is looking to hire a versatile storyteller to work as both a visual Journalist and Assistant Audience Engagement editor, with a focus on social media. This role falls within the Editorial Department, which has award-winning community news sites on the Peninsula and East Bay.

Duties of the Visual Journalist include taking photos and videos for news stories as assigned by the editors of the Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto and Redwood City news sites, or for the Peninsula as a whole. Shoots will include general and breaking news for print, online and social media. All work is expected to be delivered on time with accurate and effective captions. Flexibility is needed for occasional night and weekend assignments.

The Assistant Audience Engagement Editor helps implement strategies to grow and engage our regional audience on digital platforms, particularly on social media. This editor's duties are concentrated on collaborating with editorial staff to identify opportunities for high-quality multimedia content on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and Instagram; utilizing analytics tools to track the performance of posts; making data-driven decisions to increase engagement; and exploring other platforms where we can build our audience.

The ideal candidate has a bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism or a related field; at least two years of professional experience; a commitment to editorial standards; excellent communication, problem-solving and time management skills; competency with quality camera equipment; knowledge of Associated Press style; and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite. They will be expected to attend weekly editorial meetings to coordinate on visual projects, share audience insights with help from analytics tools and work with staff on refining their strategies and tactics.
