Eastern Oregon University encourages applications for the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Education Program Assistant (EPA) in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS).
The Education Program Assistant receives guidance and direction from the Dean of the College of AHSS office, VPA faculty and environmental health & safety professionals in providing direct functional support of learning spaces, deploying a wide variety of appropriate resources to effectively accomplish teaching and learning outcomes, and maintaining clean, orderly, and operable studios/labs/classrooms with equipment, software, and educational technology in good and safe working condition.
The College seeks a collaborative and skilled colleague who will provide service and support to EOU students participating in Art, Theatre and Music courses and activities each term, as well as the full- and part-time faculty within these academic departments. The EPA is responsible for ensuring that relevant instructional needs, workshops, labs and classrooms are met in a manner that allows them to operate professionally, efficiently, safely, and effectively to meet academic and pedagogical goals in preparing students for successful careers and fulfilling lives.
Under the direction of the Dean of the College of AHSS, the position also offers expertise, assistance, and coordination in supporting numerous publicly attended events, Early College Initiatives (including summer academies), and student recruitment events that are organized and hosted by the Art, Theatre and Music departments annually. These programs contribute to the overall purpose of the University and serve its mission by providing transformational education experiences, a thriving university community and improved financial stability by fostering new and expanding partnerships and alternative revenue sources.
Responsibilities
- In consultation with faculty, assists with the development and implementation of instructional materials or equipment for arts classes; researches, identifies and recommends appropriate education materials (e.g., tools, media, equipment, technology, supplies); assesses and develops equipment needs to support all students and faculty using the shared Visual and Performing Arts facilities.
- This position requires the ability to be both flexible and focused; to be able to set priorities and be successful in meeting those priorities. This position experiences frequent interruptions and requires the ability to keep goals and priorities clearly focused.
- This position requires good communication skills and a professional attitude in working with faculty, students and staff who have various needs and agendas. The ability to establish cooperative relationships is essential.
- This is a hands-on position and requires a strong knowledge of Arts Education and creative process techniques, materials, and equipment as well as a passion for sharing knowledge and fostering creativity. At times this position is required to be inventive in adapting tools and equipment to meet special needs and projects.
- The EPA operates with a high degree of independence within the scope of assigned work/duties. Quality workmanship is essential, as well as being efficient and resourceful, mindful of limited resources, arts pedagogy, time and materials.
- The EPA trains users in the effective operation of new equipment; maintains regular open shop/lab hours to assist students outside of scheduled class time; assists the Visual and Performing Arts faculty and students in the wood and metal shops by providing instruction and support for department and class projects.
- Assists with the mixing of glazes, kiln operation and maintenance of ceramics classrooms, studios, labs and equipment; understands the basic operation of sewing machines and assists faculty with minor repairs and scheduling of machine maintenance; understands the workings of the darkroom and works with the EH&S Professional to coordinate and schedule chemical mixing and changeovers.
- Supports outreach and engagement by providing tours of Visual and Performing Arts spaces to prospective students and community members as needed; assists faculty and Early College Initiatives office in planning and delivering Visual and Performing Arts summer institutes for K-12; assists with marketing and promotion of VPA educational programs.
- Services, troubleshoots, and performs minor repairs and maintenance to equipment and technology to ensure reliable performance for all users and arranges safety inspections; submits facilities tickets as needed for maintenance and repairs; identifies when professional repairs are necessary and prepares professional services agreements.
- Hires, trains and supervises 1-5 student workers; provides oversight for relevant Visual and Performing Arts volunteers throughout the year.
- Maintains accurate inventory and maintenance records of lab, shop and studio tools and equipment; works with the college office to provide a detailed equipment maintenance schedule to be included in the annual budget process each fiscal year.
- Performs regular walk-throughs of all Visual and Performing Arts spaces to ensure they are safe, clean and usable; reports potential safety compliance issues in all VPA facilities to EH&S Professionals for evaluation; understands the purpose of SDS files and container labels, and knows how to access these within arts spaces to ensure the safety of all students, employees, and visitors.
- Maintains regular communication with EH&S Professionals and follows instructions on material storage and disposal; assists in managing waste paints, oils, inks and other chemicals in shop areas, as requested by EH&S Professionals.
Minimum Qualifications
- Five years experience in a field related to the duties of the position AND a high school diploma or equivalent OR
- Associate's Degree and three years of work experience (paid or volunteer) supporting community programs that serve children, youth or adults.
- Evidence of strong communication and organization skills.
- Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.
- Familiarity with arts curriculum and instructional techniques.
- Experience maintaining power tools, troubleshooting specialized technology and equipment, and training end users to comply with safe operations protocols.
- Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar to employment.

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) one year of which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related functions.
- Experience working in college arts facilities (e.g., teaching, instructional support, and/or technical support in labs, studios, or workshops).
