For over 50 years, the Jamestown Community Center has been providing learning opportunities and safe spaces for low-income Mission District youth. Jamestown’s mission is to mobilize the resources of families, neighborhood residents, and other community members to help young people realize their full potential as empowered and productive members of society. Jamestown Community Center Tutor & Well-Being Lead provide students high quality academic support and physical activities. The Jamestown Community Center's mission is to help children, youth and their families develop and realize their full potential as empowered, productive, and active members of their community. The proposed VISTA project aligns with the Education K-12 Success focus area. VISTA will expand the current work being done at all Jamestown school sites. The Academic & Well-Being program is tasked to support youth with academics, physical activity and outreach to families to support in nutrition and other needs at current Jamestown sites including a newest Jamestown site: Longfellow Elementary. The VISTAs will work closely with our Jamestown team and partners to design and implement a student skill building curriculum for our staff to continue using at all our four sites. This will involve relationship and skill building with students, teachers, and Jamestown staff for youth development practices, academic and school day / afterschool alignment.
Member Duties : By the end of the project period, VISTA will have: 1. A cohort of youth who have received targeted instruction and have been supported by developing skills to support/maintain their learning. 2. A literacy lesson plan guide / curriculum to support the low income English Language Learners and newcomer youth reading at least 2 grade levels below grade. 3. A guide of structured activities for safe and healthy play during recess for all kids attending school day. 4. A plan to coordinate food distribution and other outreach efforts for family needs.
