Deadwood History, Inc. brings the legendary history of Deadwood to life at five unique properties: Adams Museum, Days of '76 Museum, Historic Adams House, Homestake Adams Research & Cultural Center and The Brothel Deadwood. Each property makes Deadwood's history accessible to visitors through exhibits, tours, social media, special events, and public programs for people of all ages.

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Visitor Services Manager ensures a positive experience and environment for guests at the Adams Museum and the Days of ’76 Museum. The manager maintains the functionality, efficiency, and professionalism of the department and trains, schedules, supervises, and develops the Visitor Services Associates. This position will also help with improving/updating interpretation in exhibits at both museums.

PAY: $18 to $18.50 per hour. This is a full time poistion with benefits: Paid Time Off, Health Insurance, and Holidays.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate with the Human Resources Director to interview and hire Visitor Services Associates (VSA) for the Adams Museum and Days of ’76 Museum.
  • Create and manage work schedule for Visitor Services Associates to ensure appropriate coverage. Must be prepared to cover any scheduling deficiencies.
  • Ensure a high level of service and visitor satisfaction through oversight of all aspects of the visitor experience including customer service, visitor safety, and museum information.
  • Observe the physical appearance and maintenance of the properties and report deficiencies to the Facilities Manager.
  • Train VSA’s so they are able to answer questions regarding exhibits and historical information about the Museums.
  • Train/Coach VSA’s how to confidently interact and engage with visitors, promote gift shop sales, and cross promote all DHI properties.
  • Use appropriate disciplinary action when necessary with the guidance of the Human Resource Director.
  • Receive in-house training as a museum interpreter and lead group tours when needed. Train Visitor Services Associates to become interpreters and tour guides.
  • Track and report monthly visitation and facility rental numbers.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the assessment of current exhibit interpretation at the Adams Museum and Days of ‘76 Museum and offer ideas on improvements/updates. Work with other DHI staff in researching, developing, writing, and editing the interpretation.
  • Assist the Education Director with projects and support, as needed.
  • Assist with special events and activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of three years of experience supervising and managing a team of at least three to five people.
  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously without close supervision.
  • A high level of energy with a willingness to develop and execute Visitor Services initiatives.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and in critical situations as required.
  • Proficiency in computers, data management, and point of sale systems.
  • Effective research and writing skills as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be capable of climbing several flights of stairs daily. Able to bend, reach, stoop, sit, and stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift or move objects up to 30 pounds. Must be able to see, speak, and hear effectively (with or without reasonable accommodations).
