General Function
The Visiting Assistant Professor is a non-tenure track position held by an individual who possesses all the qualifications to be appointed at that rank or who has held that rank at another institution. The Visiting Assistant Professor's teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor.
Description of Primary Duties
Oversee all aspects of the Orchestral Studies program, rehearse/perform with University Symphony, teach undergraduate conducting courses, teach graduate level conducting courses, conducting seminar, score reading and analysis, and symphonic literature. Mentorship of graduate conducting students in their respective recitals and final projects/thesis
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Additional Qualifications
Terminal degree in music required, (DMA, DA or PhD). Candidates who are ABD with May/August 2024 graduation will be considered. Candidates for the position must clearly demonstrate the potential for excellence in conducting, teaching, and student mentorship of graduate students and large ensemble members. Principal duties: oversee all aspects of the Orchestral Studies program, rehearse/perform with University Symphony and Chamber Orchestra (if applicable), teach undergraduate conducting, teach graduate level conducting courses; conducting seminar, score reading and analysis, and symphonic literature. Mentorship of graduate conducting students in their respective recitals and final projects/thesis. Other responsibilities may be assigned as departmental need and load dictate. The candidate is expected to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds and possess communication and interpersonal skills to work with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.
