Job description

The Microbiologics Global Virology Center in San Diego is currently looking to add a Virology Scientist/Assay Development Scientist to our team in San Diego. In this role you will be responsible for developing performing a variety of viral assays employing molecular and immunological techniques to support contract and internal research and development. Representative projects in BSL-2 and BSL-3 include: viral functional assays, virus titration assays, antiviral assays, immunochemistry ligand binding assays and viral molecular assays. Experience with several virus systems, vaccine and antiviral research and development of validated and high throughput assays is preferred.

Some key duties in this role include:

  • Plan and Execute laboratory experiments following customer requirements for viral research projects ranging from pre clinical to clinical phase that include cell and ELISA based virology methods.
  • Lead development of viral methods to support vaccine and antiviral development for contract and internal development projects including appropriate statistical analysis.
  • Identifying, evaluating and validating new viral assay offerings or new reporter systems for measuring virus and viral components to increase throughput while maintaining accuracy and precision.
  • May be involved in virus propagation and purification in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory settings of taxonomically diverse viruses.
  • Design and perform cell and ELISA based assays to support vaccine development including virus titration by TCID50, neutralization assays, plaque reduction assays and HA and NA inhibition assays.
  • Perform antiviral compound assays including IC50, plaque reduction assays and virus yield reduction assays.
  • Use of QMS processes with documentation of research or contract projects using GLP and/or GCLP standards. Includes following SOPs and developing new SOPs and forms.
  • Prepare internal and client facing data reports and presentations.
  • Able to present data and expertise across departments and to clients
  • Serve as subject matter expert in multiple technical disciplines including assay development and validation, antiviral and vaccine virology, molecular biology, genomics, and/ diagnostics.
  • Work Collaboratively with other functional units including Technology Transfer, Production and QC, and Sales and Marketing to uncover new technologies and commercial opportunities and advance new products seamlessly.
  • Understand and support Microbiologics' focus on customer-oriented satisfaction.

Here is what we are looking for:

Education/Experience

  • M.S. or Ph. D. in relevant field including Microbiology, Virology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, or Biochemistry
  • Background in Virology and a demonstrated record for leading innovative research and development in virus systems and virus assays.
  • Experience translating expertise into practical solutions to customer needs and working in GMP virology or cell culture lab required.
  • Experience with development and qualification/validation of cell and ELISA based GLP or GCLP virus assays is preferred.
  • Experience with viral quantification and antiviral assays; high throughput and automation experience is preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory culture and genetic manipulation of taxonomically diverse viruses preferred.
  • Skilled with molecular analysis for detection and quantitation of target organisms (e.g., design of multiplex assays, digital PCR)
  • Experience in managing virology responsibilities in a collaborative environment to achieve short- and long-term project goals, problem solve, and mentor other employees.
