Position: Victim/Witness Coordinator and Legal Assistant
Status: Full-time
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Hours: M-F 8-4.30, additional hours as needed

The Jefferson County Attorney is seeking applicants for a full-time Victim/Witness Coordinator and Legal
Assistant. The Jefferson County Attorney’s Office is the prosecuting attorney’s office for Jefferson County, Iowa.
The office prosecutes all criminal violations of Iowa law that occur in Jefferson County, Iowa as a principal duty.
The office also provides legal advice to County officers and departments, represents State agencies in District and
Juvenile Courts, and provides a broad array of other legal services relating to County and government. The office has two full time and one half time attorneys, a paralegal, a collections officer, and a victim/Witness Coordinator.

Duties (not comprehensive): Under general supervision, the Victim/Witness Coordinator serves as liaison among victims and witnesses to crimes, the prosecuting attorney’s office, law enforcement agencies, state agencies, local service agencies, and the court system. Responsible for ensuring office compliance with state law regarding victim rights and services, and coordinating witnesses for criminal trials. May require some travel on occasion within the State of Iowa as dictated by circumstances and needs of the office.

As legal assistant, the position is responsible for assisting attorneys in the office with case management, accounting and budgetary management, answering incoming calls and emails and either responding directly or forwarding to the appropriate individual, and meeting with parties in person to assist with matters of concern.

With both of these roles, a level of comfort in working in the criminal justice system, and an ability to closely guard confidential information is critical. As victim/Witness Coordinator, you will be responsible for assisting victims of crimes through difficult times, and treating these individuals with grace and sympathy, while also providing professional courtesy is a must. As legal assistant in the prosecuting attorney’s office, you would be privy to sensitive law enforcement and legal information, the confidentiality of which must be safeguarded.

An ideal candidate would possess:
- Understanding of Iowa civil and criminal court procedures
- Experience working in an office setting, with legal office experience a significant plus
- Strong written and spoken language skills
- Understanding of principals of Iowa Code chapter 915 relating to victim’s rights

Pay: $17.00 - $23.00 per hour
