The Opportunity

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT Southwestern) seeks applications and nominations for the position of Vice Provost andSenior Associate Dean for Education. UT Southwestern is one of the premier and largest academic medical centers in the United States, integrating pioneering research with exceptional clinical care and education. The successful candidate will be an institutional thinker, collaborative leader, innovator and superb communicator, who will bring a knowledge of the trends in medical education and have a deep understanding of the changing landscape of academic medicine. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading innovative educational programs. The individual should also have a proven capacity to partner and collaborate with department chairs, health system leaders, deans and medical education leaders at both the strategic and operational levels.

The Institution

UT Southwestern employs over 3,300 faculty within its Medical School, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Health Professions and the Peter O'Donnell Jr. School of Public Health. They are responsible for groundbreaking medical discovery, translating research leading to new treatments and preparing the next generation of scientists and health care professionals. UT Southwestern is currently experiencing unprecedented growth of its research capabilities, infrastructure and clinical volumes, with significant investments made across all domains of its clinical enterprise. UT Southwestern schools train nearly 4,000 medical, graduate and health profession students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows each year.

Professional Experience/Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in medicine or related discipline represented by UT Southwestern's educational programs.
  • Eligibility for the academic rank of Professor (with tenure preferred).

Knowledge and Work Experience

  • Extensive experience as an educational leader, deep knowledge of the educational environment and a proven track record in developing programs dedicated to the tripartite mission.
  • Strong record of academic accomplishment and administrative, managerial, operational, and budgetary experience in oversight of medical education programs in a matrix-based organization.
  • The successful candidate will be an experienced academic leader in both undergraduate and graduate medical education with a reputation as an outstanding trainee advocate, collaborator and educator.
  • Ideally, the individual will have knowledge and experience with graduate school education, including optimization of pre- and post-doctoral curricula and experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships, partner with and mentor other leaders, maintain operational oversight and lead change.
  • Engagement in the national conversation around the transformational changes occurring in medical education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and an appreciation for their important contributions to excellence.

Procedure for Candidacy

The Search Committee is chaired by Steven L. Bloom, M.D., Associate Dean for Clinical Sciences, Jack A. Pritchard, M.D., Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The committee is being assisted by WittKieffer consultants Jeff Schroetlin, Megan Welch, and Cody Burke.
