CareerWise is a nationally-recognized nonprofit organization that creates life-changing opportunities for the youngest generation of America’s workforce. We build industry-led, student-centered, modern youth apprenticeships through classroom and on-the-job learning providing flexible, alternative pathways to economic mobility. We have hundreds of CareerWise apprentices in the workplace, charting new paths to academic and career success. In addition, workforce and education leaders from across the country have visited CareerWise to learn about our youth apprenticeship model. As a result, our programs have launched in multiple states, leveraging our institutional knowledge, technology, and infrastructure.

Who We’re Looking For:

We’re looking for someone who is a highly competent and experienced Human Resources leader who can provide executive-level leadership to inspire and guide our incredible CareerWise team. You’re passionate about cultivating an amazing workplace culture and love helping people grow. With your expert knowledge of compliance and employment law across different settings, you’ll be our go-to strategist for building and implementing top-notch HR systems. You have a deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as exceptional interpersonal and change management skills that allow you to build trust at all levels of the organization. Job Summary:

Reporting to the CEO, the VP of Human Resources will serve as the organization’s top HR executive. This position will support a fantastic group of about approximately 100 staff members who are primarily based in our flagship markets of Colorado and New York City. Your mission: to create, enforce, and evaluate legally sound HR policies and best practices, while also developing strategies to build a diverse, effective, and engaged team.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP | Work with the executive team to shape our long-term mission and goals. You'll identify and implement opportunities to support these through organizational development and talent management, guiding our team through change with ease.
  • STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT | Lead the charge in shaping and executing HR strategies for our diverse and expanding workforce. From talent acquisition and upskilling to performance management and company culture initiatives, you'll be at the helm of all things HR.
  • DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION (DEI) LEADERSHIP | You will be the champion for DEI, driving forward our strategies and practices to ensure every employee feels valued and has equal opportunities to thrive.
  • EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT | You will create a vibrant organizational culture that promotes positive employee engagement, wellness, and success. Your efforts will make our workplace somewhere people are excited to be.
  • SYSTEMS ALIGNMENT | Our teams in New York City and Colorado currently have different approaches to HR policies, procedures and systems. You'll be the mastermind behind assessing, aligning, and transitioning our HR policies and procedures, including guiding a change management process for staff.
  • TEAM LEADERSHIP | You will lead and inspire the HR team, providing guidance and support to resolve any issues related to employee relations, compensation, benefits, and more.
  • COMPLIANCE | You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, state and local employment laws and regulations across the organization.

  • Operates with the highest level of integrity
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and experience advancing these principles in the workplace
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others and develop trusting relationships with staff at all levels
  • Demonstrated experience in building and implementing effective HR policies, procedures and systems
  • Demonstrated experience leading change management processes
  • Dynamic team leader that can thrive in a rapidly changing environment
  • Deep experience and knowledge of employment law and compliance
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Additional proficiencies:

  • Law degree (nice to have)
  • Extensive experience in employment law and compliance
  • Experience as a nonprofit leader
  • Experience leading teams located across multiple locations
  • Experience with merging organizations

Location:

While it is preferred that the person selected reside in the Denver, CO or New York City, NY area, all qualified candidates will be given full consideration regardless of geographic location. Travel to Denver and/or NYC is expected to be ~2-3 days per month. There may also be occasions (possibly 1-3 times per year) for all CareerWise staff to gather in-person. Exceptions will be made for special circumstances.

Compensation:

The starting salary range for this role is: $105,000 - $180,000; this role is not covered by the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the FLSA. CareerWise offers a generous benefits package including group medical, dental, and vision plans, short-term disability, 100% vested 401k plan with a 3% employer contribution, and flexible time off.
