Experience and Education
High School diploma, or equivalent, and four (4) years’ experience working with animals in a clinical or research setting, or two (2) years’ experience working as a Veterinary Technician I, or an Associates’ degree in Laboratory Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, or a related field required. Certified by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) is preferred.
Job Duties
Assist the ARC veterinary staff to provide research and health care support for a wide variety of species.
Able to routinely work in the animal facility without direct supervision.
Perform physical examinations under the general supervision of Animal Resource Center (ARC) veterinarians.
Maintain animal heath and study related records as required by the IACUC and ARC policy.
Administer and monitor general anesthesia to various small and mid-sized animal species.
Perform minor surgical procedures and assist with major surgical procedures.
Perform routine diagnostic testing utilizing common laboratory equipment.
Work comfortably in a microbiological barrier facility as well as ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 containment areas.
Obtain routine blood collections from research animals.
Perform antigen injections and sample collections for antibody production in research animals.
Expose and develop radiographs for a variety of species.
Maintain appropriate medical records as required.
Assist in maintaining surveillance of investigator research protocols.
Participate in University mandated training such as MRI, Radiation Safety and Blood Borne Pathogens.
Provide guidance and training to animal care staff and investigators in proper animal handling and restraint, behavior, anatomy, blood and tissue collection, surgical techniques, and dosing methods.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Work requires good working knowledge of various types of equipment used in veterinary medicine, surgery, radiology, and related procedures.
Work requires accuracy in preparing materials, drug calculations, recording data, and maintaining records of work performed.
Work requires use of good judgment in application of policy, procedures, or practices to work problems.
Work requires exposure to one or more disagreeable elements or hazardous materials, such as animal odors and contact with animals which may harbor diseases.
Work requires exposure to hazardous biological products.
Work requires the ability to lift 50 lbs
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in laboratory area.
