Veterinary Nurse/Veterinary Technician, Neurology
College of Veterinary Medicine

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Veterinary Nurse/Veterinary Technician, located within the Small Animal Clinical Sciences' Neurology service. The primary purpose of this position is to provide nursing care in the Neurology service by making patient assessments, performing triage, and preparing patients for exams or treatments. Position helps with performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results and records patients' medical histories and symptoms, including observations. Position administers medicine and treatments, establishes plan of care, and operates medical equipment. Incumbent serves as a resource of information and guidance. Position supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents. Depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate, individual will be hired in as a Veterinary Nurse 1, Veterinary Nurse 2, or Senior Veterinary Nurse 1.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Provides patient care in Neurology by assessing patients (many of whom are non-ambulatory), performing triage, and preparing patients for exams or treatments, including surgery. Records patients' medical histories, symptoms, and observations. Administers medications and treatment. Treats patients with Cytosar for GME (an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system). Schedules and facilitates BAER testing (hearing evaluation). Helps to establish a plan of care. Communicates with and counsels clients and referring veterinarians on the phone with regard to patients regarding post-op care, medications, triaging problems, etc. Instructs pet owners how to give in-home care to patients (physical therapy, bladder expression, administering medications, wound care). Regularly communicates with supervising Clinician. Operates medical equipment. Collaborates with others to ensure quality patient care is received. Enters charges on patient accounts. Submit requests for anesthetic procedures and imaging. Participates with CSF taps; including prep, positioning, and collection of samples.
  • Supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents. Instructs and guides students on collecting blood, urine, and other diagnostic samples. Instructs and guides students as they learn how to perform a neurological exam on a patient. Contributes to the evaluation process of the students on the rotation.
  • Conducts orientation of the Neurology service for veterinary students and others when needed. Facilitates service appointments, keeping them on schedule and maintaining efficiency. Communicate and triage questions from potential clients needing information about treatment options, procedures, and estimates for care.
  • Participates in on-call rotations, after-hours for ICU and Emergency.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)- accredited program in Veterinary Technology with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
  • Must obtain a license to practice in Tennessee within first year of employment.
  • Future graduates of an AVMA-accredited program in Veterinary Technology will be considered as long as degree is obtained prior to filling the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional relevant experience is preferred.

The Veterinary Medical Center is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. Occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work is required of this position.
