POSITION OVERVIEW: The Lifesaving Partnerships Veterinarian is a licensed veterinarian responsible for performing veterinary services and strategies with assigned shelter partners in order to increase lifesaving efforts and rates across the region. These services and strategies may include, but are not limited to, performing high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries for shelter pets and community cats, creating medical protocols, and performing treatments for shelter animals, and implementing high-volume general public vaccine and wellness clinics. The Community Initiatives Veterinarian may also be responsible for other surgical and wellness services that arise in shelter and community settings.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform physical examinations and diagnostic/medical procedures in a way that will deliver the highest quality care while minimizing patient stress and discomfort. Explain physical examination findings and communicate to the staff a diagnosis of the animal’s problems and generate and present a treatment plan for the animal.
- Provide preventive/wellness services such as vaccinations, disease and parasite testing, and owner counseling per scheduled wellness day.
- Provide health certificates and other requirements for animals in Operation Kindness’ interstate transport program.
- Perform high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries on shelter animals on a regular basis and general public animals, as needed.
- Maintain open communication with the Veterinary Technicians to determine the pace of work to be performed.
- Perform all work and maintain medical standards of care in accordance with Operation Kindness protocol.
- Participate in low-cost and free high-volume community vaccines clinics in the field, both indoor and outdoor.
- Oversee all aspects of veterinary care during the shift, including pre- and post-operative care, anesthetic administration and monitoring, emergency care, restraint, and treatment.
- Develop professional, friendly, and mutually beneficial relationships with local veterinarians, promoting Operation Kindness and our mission within the veterinary and animal welfare community.
- Provide a compassionate environment for animals and pet owners living in poverty.
- Have respect for and willingness to work with shelter and clinic staff and all types of animals and a commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine, upholding the veterinary code of ethics.
- Be able and willing to develop and administer disease prevention for shelter animals which can encompass traditional medical practices such as vaccination, parasite control, and nutrition as well as areas less commonly considered such as air quality, facility design, stress reduction and management of population density.
- Understand and practice “herd health” principles as well as individual animal care.
- Performs all other duties as assigned/required.
General Responsibilities
- Reports suspicion of animal abuse or neglect to any Manager or above immediately.
- Reports any unsafe working conditions to any Manager or above immediately.
- Maintains client, donor, volunteer, and staff confidentiality at all times.
- Follows SOPs and other safety regulations at all times.
- Completes all necessary and requested training in a timely manner in accordance with shelter policy.
- Attends staff meetings.
- Participates in shelter events as requested by Supervisor.
- Performs other duties as requested or assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Experience and Education Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine.
- Must have current Texas State Veterinary License and DEA license or the ability to obtain both before the start of employment.
- Must provide proof of and maintain personal liability insurance.
- In good standing with Texas State Board of Veterinary Medicine.
- Maintains appropriate records of Continuing Education.
- Basic computer skills.
Personal Requirements
- Supports Operation Kindness’s mission and understands how it is organized and functions as a non-profit organization.
- Travel outside of the DFW area occasionally required.
- Must be interested in the animal welfare population and serving low-income and underserved communities.
- Background with HQHVSN surgery preferred.
- This position may visit a different community location and/or sheltering facility off-site from Operation Kindness facilities each day.
- The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week. Shift times may vary and will include weekend hours.
- Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage a team.
- Is able to work equally well with paid staff members, clients and volunteers.
- Is able to relate well to persons with varied backgrounds and beliefs.
- Has a positive attitude; is open to new and innovated ideas.
- Physical Effort: Position requires lifting and carrying animals and shelter materials weighting up to 40 lbs.; when animals or materials weigh over 40 lbs., another staff member will assist in the lifting and carrying. Position also requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time and speaking over the telephone. Subject to climbing, kneeling, lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and walking to perform the essential functions. Handling dogs and cats with a variety of sizes and temperaments.
