Summary
The Office of New Student Programs (ONSP) is looking for a dynamic and passionate Veteran and Military Services Program Specialist to support and enhance military-connected student initiatives. In this role, you will be a key member of the ONSP team, with primary responsibilities for the Peer Advisors for Veteran Education [PAVE] program, military-connected college transition, and other military-connected student related initiatives supported by ONSP and the campus community. You will also be responsible for helping to create an inclusive and supportive environment that fosters successful transitions and a sense of belonging amongst the undergraduate military-connected student population.
This position is best suited to a candidate who is familiar with the higher education landscape and decentralized, complex institutions; detail-oriented, adaptable, and passionate about serving the needs of military-connected students, (including veterans, active duty servicemembers, those serving in the National Guard or reserves, and Military family members) in a fast-paced environment.
This is a term limited, non-exempt, two-year position. Position will be renewable pending available or continued funding.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Enrollment Management (OEM) manages U-M's enrollment function to efficiently optimize students' experiences throughout their engagement, from prospect to alumni. The division collaborates with campus partners, faculty, and staff, in support of the university's mission and commitment to academic quality, accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
OEM comprises a dedicated team of more than 200 full-time staff members, and up to 400 additional student and temporary staff and is structured in five operational units in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of New Student Programs, the Office of the Registrar, and OEM Administration. OEM strives to provide excellence in access and support to diverse and inspiring learners who will challenge the present and enrich the future.
Responsibilities*
55% PAVE Program Support and Delivery
  • Assist with development, delivery, and assessment of the PAVE program
  • Contribute to the planning of and serve as on-site supervision for PAVE program events and activities throughout the year
  • Directly supervise, support, and develop a team of undergraduate and graduate students. Implement comprehensive strategies to recruit, select, and train student staff
  • Work with the OEM Marketing and Communications team on projects for staff members, program participants, and application process
  • Assist in communication with new and current undergraduate military-connected students

25% VMS program Support
  • Assist in program communications efforts including monitoring the VMS email inbox, addressing inquiries, and escalating messages when necessary
  • Assist with Veterans Week and larger military-connected student events and programs
  • Assist in the staffing of other VMS events
  • Participate in regular meetings as a key member of the Transition Programs Team that includes VMS/PAVE, Mentorship and Transfer Connections

10% Recruitment and External Engagement
  • Assist in the staffing of VMS and University of Michigan in-person and virtual outreach opportunities
  • Assist with Digital, written and telephone communications concerning application, enrollment and VA benefit process with potential students

5% Professional Development and Committee Engagement
  • Participate on assigned committees within OEM
  • Participate in and attend regional and/or national Student Affairs and Military-Connected student conferences and professional development offerings

5% Other Duties as Assigned
  • Contribute in ONSP office-wide event planning and implementation.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree and one year of professional work experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous experience in student program planning and delivery of student services
  • Strong attention to details and organization skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be a self-starter and exercise initiative, with the ability to work both independently and as a team
  • Must be able to set priorities, stay on task, and have the ability to plan out required work to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse work environment and interact effectively with students, families and department team members
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in MS office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as Google Suite.
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend events

Desired Qualifications*
  • A degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field
  • Experience working with transfer students
  • Experience working with military-connected students
  • Experience supervising undergraduate students
  • Experience with event planning and facilitation
  • Prior experience working with mentoring programs or similar student support programs
  • Prior or current service in the United States Military or military-connected family members
  • Understanding of military service and Military to student transition

The Office of Enrollment Management requires a hybrid work arrangement of minimally three days on-site and two remote days. Thursdays are required as an on-site work day for all.
