The Vertex Co-op Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. You will be working closely with and learning from some of the brightest people in the industry. Job Summary:
Vertex Pharmaceuticals is working to discover and develop innovative genetic therapies with the potential to provide transformative benefit to patients. Vertex is currently advancing multiple CRISPR-based genetic therapies that have the potential to cure or stop the progression of degenerative and neuromuscular diseases. This internship will provide a fantastic opportunity to work on cutting edge science, apply state-of-the-art Gene Editing technologies, and take part in discovering and developing next-generation therapies for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and other genetic disorders.
The co-op role will be undertaken at Vertex Cell and Genetic Therapies, in a highly dynamic environment and competitive field. The overarching goal of this research role is to evaluate Gene Editing efficiency at disease genomic loci and to contribute to the development of systems for screening and delivery of next-generation therapeutic approaches. Projects related to roles within this group include evaluating novel Gene Editing delivery methods, characterizing in vitro model systems, exploratory research in new disease areas and development of next generation technologies for measuring Gene Editing outcomes. Successful candidates will be exposed to a broad range of advanced technologies including CRISPR-Cas9 genome engineering, cell culture, next generation sequencing, high content microscopy, and automated liquid-handling systems.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform cell culture experiments to deliver Gene Editing assets
  • Assess Gene Editing efficiency and cellular outcomes using endpoint readouts
  • Document experimental procedures and findings in an accurate and timely manner
  • Present results and conclusions to team members
  • Experience or familiarity with Gene Editing, CRISPR/Cas9, human disease modeling, delivery systems

Qualifications
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a College/University in a Biology/Biochemistry/Biomedical Sciences major or related field
  • High level of verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact cross-functionally with multiple team members
  • Strong analytical capabilities and problem solving skills
  • Previous hands-on experience with cell culture and molecular biology techniques is a strong plus
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
  • Candidate must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before December 2024
  • Candidate must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from July 10, 2024 – December 20, 2024
