Job description

Overview
The Department of Public Safety is seeking a Site Coordinator to work as a part of a team to coordinate logistical support for on-campus and outreach fire service training. The position is responsible for maintaining the Vermont Fire Academy site and its facilities, fleet, and equipment.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Coordinates the operation of dormitory space.
  • Oversees delivery, operation, and return of training props and materials to and from outreach training venues.
  • Responsible for all maintenance, repair, testing, and inspection of equipment as required by applicable standards and regulations.
  • Monitors training operations for safety compliance, manages the employee respiratory protection program, and administers the safety program for the Fire Academy.
  • Responsible for equipment and supply purchasing and maintaining vendor contracts as required. Instructs within courses and programs as required and qualified.
  • Performs related duties as required.

The coordination and administrative work occurs in the office setting at the Vermont Fire Academy in Pittsford during business hours. This position requires occasional evening and weekend assignments which includes attending meetings, providing instruction, and providing support to training events. Some manual work is performed while operating or maintaining fire equipment and training props for which a mechanical aptitude is helpful. A fleet vehicle is provided for work assignments requiring travel away from the work station. A limited remote work option is available, depending upon work requirements.
This position requires the ability to be medically and physically capable of performing the duties of a fire instructor, including the donning and use of personal protective equipment and respiratory protection within environments that are immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH).

PUBLIC SAFETY BACKGROUND CHECKS: Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position to include Motor Vehicle/Criminal Records, Personal History, Credit and any additional background check(s).
Environmental Factors
Duties are performed within a standard office setting, on the training grounds, and with occasional travel to off-site training and meeting locations, for which private means of transportation may be required. Transportation of training equipment and supplies may entail some physical effort. Considerable physical effort is required during psychomotor skill training, including work within high temperature and toxic environments encountered during live fire training. Duties may be performed outdoors, in all types of weather conditions. Occasional exposure to products of combustion at live fire training sessions may occur.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree or higher in fire safety, education, engineering, or related field AND two (2) years or more of experience as a firefighter in a full-time, paid on call, or volunteer fire service, INCLUDING one (1) year of responsibility for providing fire instruction.
OR
Four (4) years or more of experience as a firefighter in a full-time, paid on call, or volunteer fire service, INCLUDING one (1) year of responsibility for providing fire instruction.
Preferred Qualifications
Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, or Paramedic certification.
Professional qualification accredited certifications at the level of Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Instructor II, Fire Officer I, and Fire Officer II.
Special Requirements
Candidates must be medically and physically capable of performing the duties of a fire instructor, including the donning and use of personal protective equipment and respiratory protection within environments that are immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH).
Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position to include Security Clearance, fingerprint supported Criminal Records, Motor Vehicle records, Personal History, Credit and any additional background check(s).
