Primary Purpose of this Position:

The NC Zoo is seeking to fill a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician II position. This position's primary responsibility is to keep all zoo motorized vehicles and equipment in good, safe working order through repair work and preventive maintenance and complies with all State and Federal regulations regarding use and disposal of hazardous materials. Examples include Trams (both diesel, gasoline and propane powered) with air ride and air over hydraulic brake systems. Buses (gasoline and diesel) with air brakes, heavy and light trucks, utility vehicles such as golf carts and gators, agricultural equipment (such as tractors, mowers, aerators, backhoes, and bulldozers), other equipment such as weed eaters, blowers, and other small engines as well as portable generators. This list is not all-inclusive and would generally include any internal combustion engine. This position is expected to function at a journeyman level in accordance with established automotive and equipment repair and maintenance practices. Work assignments include the disassembly and reassembling of engines in overhaul which may include the installation of rings and bearings, adjusting or replacing valves, carburetors, governors, cams, timing gears/chains, distributors, clutches, pressure plates, release bearings, transmissions, alternators, generators, water pumps, fuel pumps, oil pumps, axles, transfer cases, universal joints, front ends (kingpins, link pins, tie rods, springs, steering damper) and repair/replacement of damaged body parts. Repairs and/or replacement of heating and air conditioning systems, compressors, electrical systems, PA systems, tires, brakes, wheel cylinders, rotors, master cylinders, brake lines, fuel lines and any other component necessary for the safe operation of the vehicle or equipment. All tools common to the automotive repair trades are used. Reference manuals are frequently referred to for procedure but much of the work is based on experience.
Work is performed inside a shop as well as outside in varying weather conditions. This position works a weekend and holiday on-call rotation. Qualified applicants will be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic. This employee is responsible for working in a safe manner and abiding by all OSHA, State and Zoo safety guidelines. Performs related duties as required.

Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a North Carolina Vehicle Safety/OBD Inspection License within 6 months of hire date.
  • Ability to diagnose operating defects in automotive equipment and determine the type and extent of repairs needed.
  • Must be available to work after hours and weekend hours when necessary and available for on-call and emergency call-back within 45 minutes.
  • Considered "Essential/Mandatory Staff" and required to work on adverse weather days, during zoo emergencies, and may be called to work special events.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 30 days of employment.
  • Position is required to participate in the DNCR Drug and Alcohol pre-employment and random testing.
  • Required to participate in an occupational health program due to contact with animal containment areas.
  • Must be able to regularly and safely: lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally; bend, stoop, and work in tight spaces; climb stairs and ladders; move over and about all types of equipment to inspect, analyze and perform repairs; stand for the majority of the day; endure extended outdoor field conditions at any time of the year; negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot; hear and respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles at day and at night.

  • Must have very good written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have good interpersonal relations/teamwork skills.

Division Information:
The North Carolina Zoo exists for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of all of North Carolina's citizens and visitors to the zoo. The mission of the zoo is to encourage the understanding of and commitment to the conservation of the world's wildlife and wild places through the recognition of the interdependence of people and nature. The Zoo displays, conserves and protects representative examples of natural beauty, plant and animal species and ecological features of the North American and African regions of the world through the presentation of live animal exhibits from these regions.
The primary purpose of the Physical Plant Maintenance Section is to maintain Zoo facilities and equipment to keep them in good condition and proper working order. This section will construct small structures such as animal caging, decking, and small building structures, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, physical plant maintenance and vehicle shop. It is responsible for seven major exhibit buildings, five restaurants, three gift shops, ten sets of restrooms, three support buildings, seven greenhouses and numerous animal holding areas. It is also responsible for servicing and maintenance of all equipment including trams, buses, trucks, vans, utility vehicles, tractors, bobcats, mowers, welders, and blowers and a variety of other equipment as well as minor painting and paving repairs.

  • Demonstrated working experience of the practices and procedures used in performing service and repairs to a wide variety of motorized vehicles and large equipment having internal combustion engines, including gasoline, and diesel fueled engines.
  • Demonstrated working experience of the practices and procedures used in performing service and repairs to a wide variety of equipment such as weed eaters, blowers and other small engines as well as portable generators.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Vehicle/Equipment electrical and charging systems.
  • Proven knowledge of varying automotive brake systems.
  • Proven knowledge of the techniques and the methods involved in determining and solving mechanical difficulties.
  • Skilled in the use and operation of various tools, instruments and diagnostic equipment commonly found in an automotive and/or heavy equipment repair shop.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
