Lou Penning Landscapes works to create and maintain beautiful landscapes that enhance the outdoor ambiance of its clients’ properties. Vegetable gardens are an important focal point in their gardens. Fruit trees (including espalier), Perennial and Rose Gardens are also an integral part of the client properties. These gardens must be maintained to be healthy, beautiful, and bountiful.

Vegetable Gardener

Job Description:

● Maintain health, beauty, and productivity of clients’ gardens. To include vegetable, perennial and rose gardens.

● Set a high standard for the vegetable garden's appearance and abundance.

● Work outdoors with your hands in the soil.

● Work with the Vegetable Garden Manager to create garden designs.

● Schedule plant orders and planting schedule with the Vegetable Garden Manager.

● Manage water system for vegetable garden (sprinklers, drip irrigation, hand-watering).

● Improve and maintain healthy soil using organic techniques.

● Timing planting for proper harvest, yield and succession harvesting. Replant, replace missing plants.

● Staking and trellising of specific vegetables.

● Communicate with Vegetable Garden Manager, Irrigation Tech’s and Maintenance Account
Managers regularly. Keep everyone informed about issues such as irrigation, weather damage, and other issues where the LPL team or client needs to be notified.

● Daily email or other communication to supervisor on work completed for the day. Complete daily worksheets, submit receipts and required documentation weekly and on time.

● Label all plant names in every bed with handwritten or typed names

● Knowledge of pest management, composting, organic gardening, plant life cycles.

● Work with Vegetable Garden Manager to manage time in a manner that allows you to visit gardens once or twice per week in Napa, Yountville, St Helena, Oakville, Sonoma areas.

● Maintenance and oversight of perennial and rose gardens. May be called to a property to provide guidance on insect, disease, etc.

● Other gardening tasks may be assigned to help out our maintenance department.

● Familiar with company employee manual and policies contained and set forth, including safety guidelines/standards.

● Use assigned tools and equipment in a proper/safe manner. Ability to lift 50lb.

● Train others in planting, staking, harvesting and pest control.

● Report directly to the Vegetable Garden Manager.

● Turn in paperwork, receipts and other documentation in a timely manner.

CA Drivers License, able to drive company vehicle.

Continuing education requirement; minimum 8 hr/year.

Job Skills/Requirements:

  • Ability to fluently communicate in Spanish & English.
  • Valid Calif. Drivers License and be insurable by company insurance carriers.
  • Experience growing organic vegetables (farm or garden) in the Napa area.
  • Insect and disease management of vegetables (i.e. cucumber beetles, downy mildew, etc.)
  • Ability to control moles, gophers and mice
  • Knowledge in soil building methods
  • Ability to perform basic drip system maintenance and controller operation
  • Knowledge of common vegetable plants at all stages of development
  • Be able to distinguish between weeds and plants at all stages of development
  • Be comfortable working outdoors in all temperatures and types of weather including cool, rainy days and occasional heat-waves. Work safely and knowing when to ask for help.
  • Ability to work alone in remote areas.
  • Physical fitness capable of bending, lifting and carrying bags of garden soil, digging beds, working on uneven surfaces. Physically comfortable lifting, carrying, digging, planting.
  • Identifying safety hazards and working in the safest possible manner at all times.
  • Self motivated and ability to create your schedule and manage your own tasks.
  • Knowledge of perennial and annual flowering plants, fruit trees, and roses.
  • Must be familiar with various types of garden tools
  • Knowledge in the basic elements of fertilizers, specifically organic
  • Computer and English skills to use company network software.

Pay: $23.00 - $27.00 per hour

Expected hours: 16 – 24 per week
