HERITAGE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL ATHLETIC COACH

REPORTS TO:  Athletic Director

DIRECT REPORTS:  Assistant Coaches

POSITION OBJECTIVE: To glorify God, disciple student athletes, and pursue excellence in athletics.  Use leadership, supervisory and teaching skills to promote the development of the program and the athletes.

QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS:  The coach is a passionate Christian with an authentic and a mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ in both their professional and personal life with a calling to disciple athletes, and a commitment to Christian values. The coach will establish positive relationships with all members of the HCS community, display a passion for Christ, students, and coaching, demonstrate respect for others, and exhibit professional discernment and good judgment. The coach will demonstrate the ability to care for and value each and every player on the team.  In addition, the coach will offer a Godly example that honors school, conference and IHSAA standards and expectations, and will address concerns and offer suggestions in an appropriate and confidential manner. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: A Bachelor’s degree required with; a minimum of 5 years coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level or similar experience for high school coaching.   All coaches must meet the requirements for Rules 7-1.4 of the IHSAA handbook regarding coaching certification for coaches (may be obtained after being hired)

Extensive knowledge of their sport 
Proven Christian Leadership integrated into football
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Model the Heritage Christian mission statement and core values on and off the field
Responsible for recruitment, administration, supervision, mentoring and evaluation of high school football staff
Directly responsible for all assigned sport activities
Will demonstrate leadership with all levels of the athletic program while lending guidance to the youth program
The Head Coach is to assist the Athletic Director in maintaining and caring for the athletic facilities and to aid in preparation of the facilities for contests when necessary
Perform or delegate all the related administrative duties associated with the program
Responsible for team selection and team discipline
Responsible for planning practices and game strategy
Responsible for assisting the Athletic Director in the purchase of equipment from responsible companies and following school purchasing procedure
Responsible for managing and operating within budget parameters and assisting in fundraising efforts to benefit the program 
Conduct themselves in a professional and sportsmanlike manner at all times, remembering that honoring God is the number one objective   
Responsible for a complete inventory of equipment, season summary, and self-evaluation to be made at the end of each season
Responsible for all coaches knowing the rules in the IHSAA and national Federation rule books and abiding by them at all times
Responsible for the direction of offseason workouts and compliance with all IHSAA summer restrictions
Should have leadership qualities that consistently motivate the athletes, parents and fellow coaches 
Responsible for being an active and supportive participant in any conference.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to meet physical requirements of the position.   Must possess physical agility to move up to a minimum of 50 pounds over a mile distance.  Must be able to traverse a variety of surfaces, including grassy field area and generally across campus.  Must be able to use computer and other audio-visual equipment.  Must be able to ascend and descend stairs.  Must be able to position oneself to work with student athletes.  Must be able to communicate with others. Specific vision abilities required in this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  The employee must be able to hear low volume sounds and understand speech at various volume levels.  Must be able to assist student athletes for health and safety reasons.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Generally outdoors and athletic facilities.   Exposure to weather is expected; potential for excessive noise.   

EXEMPT STATUS: Stipend per season

WORK SCHEDULE:  As required during season and as needed in off-season, the details of which will be determined upon hire.
