Variety: Senior Entertainment Technology Editor

Variety Intelligence Platform (VIP+), a division of Variety that operates a digital content offering for subscribers analyzing the media and technology industries, is seeking a full time Senior Entertainment Technology Editor to join our team. This role will report into both the co-editor in chief of Variety and the President & Chief Media Analyst of VIP+. The Editor will cover the latest advances used in production and post-production for cameras, editing systems, visual effects, software, theatrical distribution, cinematography, audio, and projection systems. The Editor will also report on Hollywood's crafts beat for Variety's Artisans section.
Launched in April 2020, the VIP+ product balances daily short-form commentaries and newsletters with monthly white papers and decks. All are filled with sharp writing and chart data. The right candidate will touch some or all aspects of the operation with the right combination of writing, editing and/or managing.
Writing is the top priority. Candidate must demonstrate extensive knowledge of and ability to write with authority and insight about a wide range of trends, issues and companies impacting the media and technology industries, whether it's traditional businesses like Disney or newer platforms like TikTok.
Qualifications:

• The team at VIP+ writes with style and sophistication to engage industry executives, a commitment to accuracy and attention to detail are a must. The VIP+ team writes clean copy that requires little editing.
• Candidate must be an obsessive follower of the latest developments in media and technology production and have no shortage of opinions on them.
• Data-driven analysis skills are an absolute must, as is working with easy-to-use software to create charts and tables from that data.
• Writing quickly on deadline is a plus, as is the ability to shift gears between quick-turnaround assignments and long-term projects.
• While reporting and breaking news is not part of the job description, journalists who are strong thinkers are also encouraged to apply.
• Extra points if you are active on social media; capable of creating questions for original surveys; amenable to speaking either in person in front of audiences or via livestream for panel discussions, industry conference keynotes, webinars, TV talking-head appearances, etc.
• A collaborative team player who has ideas to spare and is comfortable both giving and receiving feedback.

Requirements:

• 5+ years' experience writing, reporting or analyzing the media and technology businesses
• Must provide references and work samples of both short and long-form writing.
• WordPress experience or familiarity with a similar CMS
• Must be comfortable communicating via Slack or similar business communication platform

Typical wage range: $110k - $130k. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role. The typical candidate is hired below midpoint of the range. The total compensation package for this position will also include other elements, a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits including 401(k) eligibility and paid time off benefits.
