Bus Aide/Attendant (Part Time)
 
LOCATION: Van Driver - District
JOB GOAL:  The Van Driver for McKinney-Vento Students is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of homeless or displaced students under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act to and from school. This role involves ensuring the students' well-being, maintaining the van's safety, and supporting the school district's commitment to providing education for all students. 
 
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Student Transportation: Safely transport McKinney-Vento students to and from their homes or temporary residences to their designated schools in accordance with the McKinney-Vento Act's guidelines.
  2. Safety and Compliance: Ensure that the van is well-maintained and complies with all safety and regulatory requirements. Conduct routine vehicle checks and inspections to maintain a safe and reliable mode of transportation.
  3. Route Planning: Plan and follow efficient and timely transportation routes, considering students' locations, school schedules, and any relevant changes.
  4. Student Assistance: Provide transportation to students as needed, especially for students who may be experiencing housing instability or other challenges.
  5. Communication: Maintain effective communication with the transportation office to coordinate transportation arrangements and address any concerns or issues related to the students' transportation needs. This also included maintaining open communication with school staff and families.
  6. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of daily transportation activities, including mileage, student attendance, and any incidents or unusual occurrences. Submit reports and records as required by the school district.
  7. Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond to emergencies or unforeseen situations, such as vehicle breakdowns or inclement weather conditions, to ensure the safety and well-being of the students.
  8. Cultural Sensitivity: Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and awareness when working with McKinney-Vento students, recognizing the unique challenges they may face due to their housing situation. Be sensitive to their needs and maintain a supportive and caring attitude.
 
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Familiarity with and adherence to all traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of students and maintain a compassionate and nonjudgmental attitude.
  • Knowledge of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a plus.
  • Previous experience as a school bus driver or Van Driver is preferred.
 
 Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit for extended periods.
  • Physical stamina to assist students with mobility and other needs.
  • The capability to lift and carry moderate loads (e.g., student backpacks, wheelchairs, etc.).
Working Conditions:
  • The position may involve irregular hours, early mornings, and afternoons to align with school schedules.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions while operating the van.
  • Interaction with students and parents who may be experiencing challenging circumstances.
  • Driver will only need to report to work on days students are in school.
 
TEMPORARY POSITION:        YES
            Note:   All temporary positions will end on June 30th.
 
FULL TIME OR PART TIME:    Part Time - Casual/Seasonal, 18.45 an hour.
 
ELIGIBLE FOR "STATE SHARE" OF BENEFITS:        No
 
PENSION ELIGIBLE POSITION:  No
 
NOTE:  A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required for all employees of the Seaford School District.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  All new state employees will be required to participate in the State of Delaware's Direct Deposit system.  With direct deposit, wage and salary payments are deposited in the employee's bank account via electronic funds transfer.
All final candidates for employment must have a satisfactory criminal background check before being placed on contract/payroll as per State of Delaware regulations. Candidates must call the Delaware State Police at (800) 464-4357 to make an appointment.  The cost of the criminal background check is $65 (expense borne by the prospective employee).  Final candidates must also receive a satisfactory child protection registry check.
Final candidates must also produce documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.
 
The State of Delaware has initiated a lag pay policy which means that new employees will receive the first paycheck at the end of the second pay period of work.
