CITY OF TUTTLEOCCUPATIONAL TITLE: Utility Locator

DEPARTMENT: Public Works

SUPERVISON: This position is under the supervision of the Gas Superintendent.

EEO CLASS: Service Worker (EEO-9)

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time

GRADE: A, B, or C

PURPOSE OF POSITION: This is a non-exempt position in the Gas Department that exists to provide safety for those that could be impacted by damaged utilities, ie businesses, home owners, and excavators. Primary duties include fulfilling locate requests in a safe timely manner, operating a company vehicle, reading utility prints, contacting/communicating with customers and contractors, and using locating equipment. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Gas Superintendent who reviews the work through evaluation or reports, results, analysis of complaints, and personal conferences.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

Items listed below are not intended to be a complete listing of all duties of this position.

  • Use of provided utility locating equipment, paint, flags, and other methods to accurately locate and mark underground natural gas, water, sanitary sewer, and fiber optic lines.
  • Read and understand maps, service cards, plats, and other client records to accurately locate lines.
  • Work with third party contractors to coordinate timely completion.
  • Serve the customer with exceptional customer service and exceed their expectations.
  • Accurately and neatly complete daily paperwork.
  • Comprehend and comply with all safety policies and procedures of the City of Tuttle as well as client safety, and operational policies and procedures.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of the utilities industry’s purpose and function.
  • Operate a company vehicle and equipment in a safe and conscientious manner.
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor, which may include but not limited to clerical functions, and vehicle/equipment maintenance, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be eligible for employment in the United States.
  • Basic computer literacy (all documentation is computer/iPad based).
  • Must be able to communicate verbally via telephone and in person in a clear and concise manner.
  • Minimum of 0-1 year of utilities industry experience preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Employee works completely outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must be available for emergency calls outside of normal hours.
  • Must have finger dexterity to type on a keyboard and use an iPad.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to carry up to 15 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach frequently and extend arms/hands in any direction.
  • Must be able to walk continuously, often on uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to sit/travel in a vehicle from one area to the next.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to bend, crouch, and kneel.
  • Must be able to dig on a frequent basis.
  • Some exposure to disgruntled citizens, must be able to handle tactfully.

WORK SCHEDULE:

May require extended work hours depending on department needs including nights, weekends, and holidays.
