Job description

JOB SUMMARY

Performs skilled work in the inspection, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, installation, and repair of process equipment in the areas of wastewater and water treatment plants and integral pump stations. Work is performed under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Inspects and performs daily maintenance; prepares routine reports and maintains daily records and logs.
  • Follows established preventive maintenance procedures regarding all phases of Treatment Facilities and integral pump stations.
  • Uses sound judgment to recognize and report unusual conditions and corrections made.
  • Monitors records, flow, pressure, level sensing and trending equipment, and determines conditions; performs routine adjustments, services and replaces in response to monitoring results.
  • Monitors and maintains electrical equipment in and around, treatment facilities and integral pump stations.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area and maintenance vehicles.
  • Provides valve and equipment mechanical adjustments.
  • Responds to Chief Plant Operator's quality mechanical concerns.
  • Participates in emergency response and scheduled on call program.
  • Utilizes respiratory protection equipment as prescribed and all other applicable PPE requirements.
  • Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in public works construction, maintenance, wastewater collection, water distribution, repair activities.
  • Or an equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience.

Licenses and/or Certificates:

  • Must maintain a valid Commercial Driver's license Class "A" with endorsement code "N" (tank vehicle) and Air Brake endorsement, or ability to acquire permit within 30 days of hire and ability to acquire license within three (3) months of hire.
  • Must pass a respirator fit test and pulmonary function test in conjunction with pre-employment physical and maintain the ability to pass annually, (i.e., no facial hair between the sealing surface of the face piece or that interferes with valve function, etc.).
  • Within one (1) year of position assignment:
    1. Must maintain CCU Confined Space Entry Certification
  • Within two (2) years of position assignment:
    1. Must maintain Water Distribution Operator Level 3 License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications.
  • Knowledge in the repair of electrical and mechanical systems in the utility service area.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required in the workplace.
  • Skill in the proper use and operation of tools and machinery used in job tasks.
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
  • Ability to be medically able to wear a respirator as determined by the OSHA Respiratory Medical Evaluation process.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with established county procedures in relation to respiratory protection.
  • Ability to input information into a personal computer.
  • Ability to complete light metal fabrication and repairs using torches and welding equipment.
  • Ability to operate cranes and rigging equipment for the removal and installation of process equipment.
  • Ability to recognize issues related to vibration and alignment for pumps and motors.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in detecting unusual conditions, or recommending repair scheduling.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, and blueprints in performance of job duties.
  • Ability to respond in a professional manner to complaints or inquiries from a variety of sources.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and enforcing department codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives under general supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems.
  • Ability to perform routine functions without referral to supervisor.
  • Ability to maintain routine records and reports.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and other applicable heavy equipment safely.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled and when required due to emergencies.
  • Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, service providers, other employees, and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is exposed to outdoor weather conditions or irate customers, extreme noise, odors, heights, and/or dust.

RISK/SAFETY CONDITIONS

The position requires moderate exposure or risk related to physical and/or mental health and safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, electricity, high system process pressures, assault and battery, communicable disease, etc.).
