Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill six USDA/OSU Small Fruit Breeding Program positions for Horticulture at Oregon State University (OSU).
The employee will assist in laboratory, greenhouse, and field work to support the Cooperative Small Fruit Breeding Program, located at the USDA-Agricultural Research Service – Horticultural Crops Research Lab in Corvallis, OR (OSU Campus) and, if working during the summer field season, up to once per week at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC) in Aurora, OR.

Student employees will have the option to work full-time (40 hours) during the summer; flexible part-time hours (up to 24 hours) are available for employees who wish to work during the OSU fall, winter, and spring terms and term breaks.

Position Duties
Duties will consist of:
  • (Laboratory) dishes and housekeeping, preparing plant tissue culture media and solutions, fruit sample analysis, data collection for plant and fruit samples, data entry into spreadsheets;
  • (Greenhouse) watering/fertilizing plants, pruning, planting/transplanting, labeling, cleaning pots and work areas;
  • (Field) trellis building, plant training, pruning, hoeing/weeding, mowing, recording data.

Must be at least 15 years of age and able to:
  • Perform assigned tasks without close supervision after training
  • Pay attention to detail
  • Work indoors/outdoors
  • Sit/stand/walk for extended periods
  • Lift up to 50 lbs
  • Tolerate exposure to dust, fumes, noise and outdoor summer temperatures
  • If at least 18 years of age, with a valid driver’s license, be willing to drive a motor pool vehicle to offsite locations, as needed, at the request of the supervisor.

Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Student employees are limited to 40 hrs per week during summer and 20 hrs per week during class terms and during term breaks. Students will receive laboratory, greenhouse, and farm safety training through OSU.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications
This position MAY require driving a Federal vehicle; the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position-qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Experience with laboratory protocols, plants, data entry.
  • Experience or interest in operating tractors or similar farm equipment (minimum age 18).

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Hours are flexible during the Fall, Winter, and Spring terms; Employees will have the option to work full time (up to 40 hours) during Summer field season.
