Summary:

Activity Managers manage a team of Activity Leaders and is responsible for all activities outside the classroom for our ESL international summer school programs. Successful AM’s work closely with students, Activity Leaders, Group Leaders and the Center Manager to ensure that all of the students are safe, well-organized and have a fun experience.

Job Purpose:

The Activity Manager (AM) oversees the activities department and manages the team of Activity Leaders (ALs) to ensure that all activities and excursions are appropriately planned, staffed and equipped for operation and that ALs are fully briefed of their respective role for each event.

Work Schedule:

This is a residential position (full board & dorm accommodation are included). Please see embassysummer.com for more information about each location. 

A flexible work approach towards the position with the ability to work nights, weekends and holidays is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the smooth planning, organization and operation of day-to-day activities and excursions to ensure the delivery of a high quality and engaging activities program
  • Manage and motivate a team of activity staff to establish a positive working environment among the team
  • Maintain positive working relationships and liaise with conference staff, service providers such as transportation companies, excursion sites and entertainment venues
  • Oversee, plan and promote a comprehensive on site activity and off site excursion program
  • Manage and plan, with direction from the Center Manger, a staff rotation schedule that ensures adequate staffing levels are met
  • Ensure that appropriate training and briefings are provided for activity staff for all activities and
  • excursions
  • Provide support and guidance to staff on activities including regular observations and feedback
  • Follow up on all required financial and administrative paperwork pertaining to the activities program
  • Ensure that activities schedules are clearly displayed and activities and excursions are actively promoted  
  • Assist the Center Academic Manager with coordinating student arrivals and departures
  • Contribute to student’s development of life skills through program assistance and administration
  • Ensure and maintain proper levels of student discipline, welfare and safety of all students during activities and around the residence area during non-activity program hours
  • In collaboration with the Center Manager, to carry out a 24-hour emergency on-call rotation schedule
  • Assist in and ensure that scheduling residential supervision duties, including meal and bedtime supervision and guardian duties, are undertaken by ALs who have on-site residential responsibilities
  • Review all activity leader timesheets are in line with the rotation schedule
  • Appropriately price and promote optional excursions
  • Lead and participate in regular meetings with Group Leaders

Qualifications & Training:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience working with or supervising minors
  • Experience working in summer school or summer camp environment
  • Previous experience as an activity leader or summer camp staff
  • Ability to manage, lead and inspire a team of staff effectively to work together as part of a dynamic team in a varied and fast-paced role
  • Knowledge of the local area and leading activities or excursions in the area
  • Effective communication (written and verbal) and leadership skills
  • Proven organizational skills with the ability to work under pressure and adapt to change in a high pressure environment
  • Proven excellent time management, organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm, diplomacy, patience, and flexibility
  • Working knowledge of computers and Word and Excel programs
  • Experience with working with budgets
  • Valid First Aid and/or CPR Certificate (Desirable)
  • Lifeguard and/or other coaching qualification (Desirable)

 

Weekly trainings are held virtually (paid) for 1-2 hours a week online starting in April.

Montreal Manager Training (at McGill): June 26, 27 (move in on 26th)

 

LA - CSULA

Training Days Activity Leaders / Teachers: Mandatory full day Thursday, June 15 (9-5) and recommended Wednesday, June 14 (12-5)

Camp Dates: June 18 – August 6 (candidate move-in dates, as well as start and end dates, may vary, and do not coincide directly with camp dates)

CSULA Teaching Timetable: 3 hours of teaching on Mondays;  6 hours of teaching on Wednesdays and Fridays (Monday 9am to 10.30am  and 10.50am to 12.20pm, Wednesday / Friday 9am to 10.30, 10.50am to 12.20pm, 1.50pm -3.20pm and 3.40pm to 5.10pm). If double banking, teaching is scheduled Monday afternoon and the full day schedule is repeated Tuesday/Thursday. Teaching is possible on Saturdays as well.

 

LA - UCLA

Training Days Activity Leaders / Teachers: Mandatory full day Friday, June 23 (9-5) and recommended Thursday, June 22 (12-5)

Camp Dates: June 25 – August 6 (candidate move-in dates, as well as start and end dates, may vary, and do not coincide directly with camp dates)

UCLA Teaching Timetable: 3 hours of teaching on Mondays;  6 hours of teaching on Wednesdays and Fridays (Monday 9am to 10.30am  and 10.50am to 12.20pm, Wednesday / Friday 9am to 10.30, 10.50am to 12.20pm, 1.50pm -3.20pm and 3.40pm to 5.10pm). If double banking, teaching is scheduled Monday afternoon and the full day schedule is repeated Tuesday/Thursday. Teaching is possible on Saturdays as well.

 

NY - LIU Brooklyn

Training Days Activity Leaders / Teachers: Mandatory full day Friday, June 16 (9-5) and recommended Thursday, June 15 (12-5)

Camp Dates: June 18 – July 30 (candidate move-in dates, as well as start and end dates, may vary, and do not coincide directly with camp dates)

LIU Teaching Timetable: 3 hours of teaching Mondays through Fridays (9am to 10.30am and 10.50am to 12.20pm). If double banking, teaching is also scheduled daily: 1.50pm -3.20pm and 3.40pm to 5.10pm

 

Boston – Tufts

Training Days Activity Leaders / Teachers: Mandatory Thursday, June 22 (9-5) and recommended Wednesday, June 21 (12-5)

Camp Dates: June 25 – July 30 (candidate move-in dates, as well as start and end dates, may vary, and do not coincide directly with camp dates)

Boston Teaching Timetable: 3 hours of teaching Mondays through Fridays (9am to 10.30am and 10.50am to 12.20pm). If double banking, teaching is also scheduled daily: 1.50pm -3.20pm and 3.40pm to 5.10pm
