We have an exciting opportunity within our US Medical Affairs leadership team for a Field Sr. Director, Liver Medical Science. This role will be field based and must be based in the Central Region travel-hub city.
Reporting to the Executive Director US Medical Affairs (USMA) Liver, the Field Sr. Director Medical Affairs is a leadership position responsible for managing the medical science liaisons (MSL) within the liver disease team.
Job Responsibilities
As an integral part of the USMA Liver Leadership Team, and in close collaboration with cross-functional partners, the Field Sr. Director will establish and maintain the tenor of Gilead's scientific communications with the healthcare providers, researchers, and patient community organizations in the US. This liver disease subject matter expert will contribute to the development and execution of the US Medical Affairs Strategic Plans for viral hepatitis and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC).
Specific responsibilities for this role will include but are not limited to:
  • Leads and manages a team of Liver MSLs in the assigned East region, and reports to the US Medical Affairs Executive Director in Liver Disease.
  • Oversees MSL scientific engagement activities to support compliant HCP interactions as well as scientific insight and data collection to inform internal strategies.
  • Ensures the successful dissemination of innovative clinical information to thought leaders and fosters medical and scientific information exchange from and throughout the specific disease communities.
  • Identifies, recruits, and hires top talent to build an MSL team; coaches, oversees, and conducts performance evaluations of MSLs via active observation of the team; establishes clearly defined team and individual goals and objectives (quantitative and qualitative); implements processes to routinely monitor progress, supporting and correcting performance as necessary.
  • Coordinates Medical Sciences participation in Gilead advisory boards, symposia, internal training, and educational programs (e.g., speaker training and conference planning).
  • Guides the MSL team with their territory strategic planning and provides constructive coaching for scientific engagement and field excellence.
  • Directs MSL activities to ensure the highest ethical standards & compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, industry codes, policies, SOPs, code of conduct, and guidelines.

Specific Job Requirements:
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, motivation, initiative, mentoring, strategic thinking, problem solving, planning, & organizational skills.
  • Advanced scientific degree required, doctorate level clinical/medical degree (e.g., MD, DO, PharmD, Ph.D., NP/PA) preferred.
  • 10+ years' experience in the pharmaceutical industry, 5+ years in an MSL function and/or US Medical Affairs role, 5+ years in clinical practice.
  • Clinical practice experience within Liver Disease (hepatology, gastroenterology, infectious disease) is highly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of US pharma rules and regulations particularly as they apply to MSL activities; ability to develop, coach & oversee a highly compliant MSL function.
  • Experience managing teams as well as functional area projects, resources, & budgets.
  • Leadership experience developing, tracking & reporting team performance, preferably in Medical Affairs.
  • Experience with managing & developing HCP relationships.

The salary range for this position is: $249,645.00 - $323,070.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
