Shift/Work Days and Hours: Monday - Friday, 12 - 16 hours per week, variable / 40 hours per week (during the Summer)

Summary/Objective
The purpose of the Planning Intern position is to provide the student with work experience outside of the classroom. Experience includes architectural design, digital/illustration modeling, development modeling, zoning administration, land use, community planning, grant administration, historic preservation, housing and urban design in the context of municipal government.
Essential Functions

  • Conducts architectural design work using various methods - 2D/3D modeling software, hand drawing, photo editing, etc.
  • Illustrates using a variety of methods, including Adobe Suite and hand sketches, conceptualizations and ideas as they relate to area plans or site-specific communications.
  • Performs research and analysis related to best practice and architectural innovation based on goals of a specified project.
  • Visits sites and areas of interest to study and record existing conditions.
  • Perform research, write memos and staff reports, present before boards and committees.
  • Draft minutes of the Planning Board, Historic Resources Board, Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and/or Board of Zoning Appeals.
  • Attend administrative and committee meetings.
  • Perform basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, file management, and customer service.
  • Participate in a variety of special projects as assigned.
  • Research, collect, compile, record and summarize technical data; assist higher level planning staff assemble documentation for projects and presentations.
  • Assist with preparation, review and monitoring of grants and grant proposals for projects as assigned.
  • Work with local officials, interested citizens, and non-governmental organizations in the public planning process.

Other Duties
  • Understand and apply the principles and practices of municipal and regional planning.
  • Present well-organized thoughts using proper grammatical structure.
  • Work cooperatively with other City employees, other government and private entities, and the general public.
  • Complete assignments and exhibit a desire to continually improve upon new and learned skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Required Education and Experience
  • Enrollment in a university curriculum for architecture, landscape architecture, land use/regional/community planning, public administration, civil engineering, or another similar field.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Preference will be given to students enrolled in an architecture or landscape architecture program.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling, rendering, and illustrative software such as Twinmotion, Revit, ArcMap, and Adobe Products.
  • Familiarity with GIS.
