Upper SchoolEnglish Teacher and English Department Chair (PK-12)

The Baldwin School is seeking a full-time Upper School EnglishTeacher andDepartment Chair to teach four sections of Upper School English and serve as a thought leader in the department and school community. The English Department Chair works with Division Directors and the Dean of Academic Affairs to define, articulate, and implement the School's English curriculum from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. The Department Chair provides mentorship and academic leadership to department faculty members. Successful candidates will make meaningful contributions to co-curricular programs, engage in those duties typical of independent school life, and support the school's mission. They will have an understanding of and appreciation for girls' education.

Successful candidates will enjoy working collaboratively with other grade-level teachers to develop innovative and engaging lessons to meet the needs of all learners. They will possess expertise in a range of literary genres and time periods, and be committed to seeking out new voices to include in their classes. Successful candidates will engage students positively, with a growth mindset, and interact productively with colleagues and parents.

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with English Department team-teachers;
  • Work with other grade-level teachers to build cross-curricular connections;
  • Coordinate with the Writing Center to support students in their writing process;
  • Collaborate with other grade-level teachers and the learning support team to scaffold and teach skills needed across all disciplines;
  • Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and commitment to growth for yourself and your students;
  • Actively pursue professional development in the teaching of literature and writing, teaching with technology and/or teaching in interdisciplinary project-based approaches;
  • Develop appropriate curriculum and lessons to prepare students for the next level of classes; and
  • Other duties as assigned by the Division Director or Head of School.

Department Chair Responsibilities:

  • Work with Division Directors and the Dean of Academic Affairs to develop and implement the PK-12 English curriculum;
  • Perform regular review and revision of the English curriculum and ensure that it is designed to meet the developmental needs of students;
  • Provide academic leadership by modeling standards of best instructional practice;
  • Attend Academic Council meetings with other school leaders to review curriculum, school policies and practices, and assist with strategic planning;
  • Observe classroom teaching, provide feedback, and conduct annual evaluations in collaboration with Division Directors;
  • Plan and lead regular department meetings to review and discuss pedagogy and curriculum; and
  • Manage the department budget.

Required Qualifications Include:

  • M.A in English and/or education;
  • 7 years of teaching experience, or its equivalent, at the Upper School level;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Creative, energetic, and positive approach to teaching;
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional collaboration and team-teaching.
  • Expertise in differentiating instruction in reading and writing;
  • Background in interdisciplinary and project-based learning;
  • Commitment to the pursuit of professional development in the teaching of literature and writing; and
  • Experience using academic technology software and classroom technology.
