The Unit Secretary performs indirect patient care services and clerical duties for the medical floor to facilitate effective and efficient delivery of care by physician and nursing staff.
- Performs clerical duties related to patient admission, transfer and discharge.
- Maintains and updates Administrative Data Screens for each patient in OB, Nursery and Pediatrics. Schedules OB operative procedures and outpatient testing.
- Answers nurse call system and telephone immediately and accurately relays messages as necessary. Monitors Watch Child system and notifies RN of patient alarm status.
- Routinely verifies all patient chart identification is correct and all patient consent forms are signed. Builds and breaks down medical charts for record keeping.
- Initiates calls to physicians as requested. Completes the initiation of all orders on the patient chart promptly and accurately.
- Follows the established protocol for obtaining, charging for, and returning supplies/equipment and maintains adequate supply levels through the use of accurate inventory control.
- Assists with patients' provision of care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area (neonate to adult/geriatric).
- Interprets hospital policies to visitors or staff utilizing “guest relations” skills. Answers questions from patients, family and visitors, and accurately relays messages to appropriate members of the health care team.
- Maintains adequate levels of chart materials, requisitions, and other nursing or medical forms. Oversees Obtaining, charging for, and returning supplies/equipment. Orders supplies and equipment as needed for work areas.
Experience
Required- 1 year(s): Medical facility or physician's office experience.
Education
Required- High School/GED or better
